Chapter 7 - Forty-Three MinutesEmma looked at her father as if she no longer recognized him.

“Daddy?”
Alexander lowered his weaponless hands.
Vivian still held the pistol, but Thomas Reed maintained a clear line toward her. No one moved.
Alexander spoke to Emma, not Vivian.
“Your mother collapsed in the conservatory.”
“Did you wait?”
“Yes.”
The answer struck harder than denial.
Mrs. Bell covered her mouth.
Nora stared at Alexander.
“Why?”
“I believed she had been drugged, and I knew the estate medical system was compromised.”
“You let her lie there for forty-three minutes?” Nora demanded.
“I moved her into the secure room beneath the conservatory. I called a private physician I trusted.”
“Who?”
“Dr. Samuel Kline.”
Nora’s face changed.
“Kline worked for Halcyon.”
“I did not know.”
Vivian smiled.
“Everyone worked for Halcyon. That was the point.”
Alexander described the night.
Catherine had spent weeks investigating unauthorized access to Emma’s trust. She believed someone inside the mansion intended to create a medical emergency and declare both parents incapable.
When she collapsed, Alexander found an empty syringe beside her.
The house emergency line routed through Ashford Protective Services. He feared calling it would alert whoever planned the attack.
He carried Catherine to the safe room and contacted Kline through a number Catherine had given him.
The doctor arrived privately.
He pronounced her dead.
Only then did Alexander call emergency services.
“You accepted one doctor’s word?” Nora asked.
“He had served our family for fifteen years.”
“He signed the false death record that hid my survival in Lisbon.”
Alexander looked devastated.
“I learned that later.”
Emma stepped toward him.
“Could Mommy have lived?”
“I don’t know.”
The uncertainty had haunted him for five years.
Vivian raised the pistol slightly.
“You see, Emma? Your father’s control killed your mother.”
Alexander looked at her.
“You knew Kline’s connection.”
“I discovered it after Catherine died.”
“And used him for the trust evaluation last month.”
Vivian’s eyes narrowed.
Alexander had evidence.
Leona Park had traced the private doctor who performed Emma’s biometric examination. The clinic was owned through one of Kline’s former companies.
Kline was supposedly retired.
He had signed the false hearing records under another physician’s number.
“Where is he?” Alexander asked.
Vivian’s confidence returned.
“You’ll meet him when Lena arrives.”
A low engine sounded outside.
Not a car.
A helicopter.
The mansion’s roof lights activated despite the security lockdown.
Martin stared at the ceiling.
“She’s landing.”
Vivian backed toward the window.
Thomas ordered her to drop the weapon.
Instead, she turned it toward herself.
Martin stopped.
“Vivian.”
“If you take me, Lena kills us both.”
“She already intends to.”
“You don’t know her.”
“I know she sold her own children.”
Vivian’s lips trembled.
“She came back for us.”
“No. She came back for access.”
The helicopter settled onto the estate’s private lawn.
Through the windows, armed figures moved beneath the rain.
Alexander’s compromised security officers opened the eastern doors.
Thomas’s radio came alive.
“South team cut off. Multiple hostiles inside.”
The mansion was becoming a siege.
Alexander moved toward Emma.
Vivian swung the gun toward him.
Martin stepped into the line.
The shot struck his shoulder.
He fell.
Vivian dropped the weapon in shock.
Thomas kicked it away.
Nora rushed to Martin.
Blood spread across his shirt, but the wound appeared high and nonfatal.
Emma screamed.
Alexander picked her up.
She clung to him despite the questions between them.
Vivian sank beside her brother.
“I didn’t mean—”
Martin laughed weakly.
“You always say that after choosing.”
The library speaker activated.
A woman’s voice, warm and maternal, filled the room.
“Vivian, open the east door.”
Vivian looked upward.
“Mother?”
“Bring Emma. Martin has failed. Nora has interfered. Alexander remains emotionally unstable.”
Nora’s face twisted at her sister’s voice.
“Lena.”
The speaker paused.
“Nora. You should have stayed dead.”
Nora stood.
“You sold your children.”
“I placed them where they could become extraordinary.”
“You turned them into thieves.”
“I gave them access no poor child ever receives.”
Alexander carried Emma toward the hidden passage.
The voice addressed him.
“You cannot leave through Catherine’s tunnels. I designed the final section.”
A metallic grinding sounded within the walls.
Hidden doors began sealing.
Lena continued.
“Bring Emma to the ballroom. I will exchange safe passage for her voluntary signature.”
Alexander held his daughter tighter.
“No.”
“Then the mansion burns with everyone inside.”
Smoke began curling beneath the library doors.
The Matriarch had activated fires in several service corridors.
Vivian looked toward the smoke.
“She wouldn’t.”
Martin gripped his wounded shoulder.
May you like
“She already did.”
👉 The Matriarch arrived by helicopter and set the mansion ablaze, forcing Alexander to choose between surrendering Emma and trapping everyone inside Catherine’s sealed tunnels.
