Chapter 26 - The Cost of the Missing PageThe missing Vale family page arrived by encrypted message an hour later.

Edward sent a photograph only, withholding the physical original.
It showed three generations of placements and biological connections.
David Vale fathered Lena and Helena with his wife.
Years later, one of the twins gave birth to Catherine.
The biological father listed for Catherine was also David Vale.
The record described the pregnancy as a “closed internal preservation event.”
Catherine stared at the page.
Alexander stood beside her in Leona’s temporary command center.
“You do not have to read it.”
“I already did.”
The words transformed her understanding of Lena and Helena.
One twin had been abused by their father.
The other helped conceal it.
Catherine was placed with another family to hide the crime.
Halcyon may have begun partly as Lena’s attempt to control placement after her own child was taken.
Trauma did not excuse the empire she built.
But it altered its origin.
Nora sat across the room, devastated.
“My father was violent, but I never knew this.”
“Which twin gave birth to me?” Catherine asked.
The page used only the letter H.
Helena could be a name or a deliberately reversed identity.
Edward still controlled the answer.
Lena remained in custody at the mansion but refused to clarify.
“You want a clean mother and a guilty mother,” she told Catherine. “Families do not divide so conveniently.”
“Did your father hurt you?”
Lena smiled without warmth.
“Which answer would make you obey me?”
Catherine left.
The children were reunited with the adults at a secure government facility that operated outside Ashford contracts.
Emma ran to Alexander first.
Then stopped halfway, uncertain after everything she had learned.
He knelt.
She completed the distance and embraced him.
Grace approached Catherine more cautiously.
Noah remained near Thomas.
Rebecca waited until Emma chose to come to her.
The family was no longer a simple shape.
No one tried to force one.
Grant Mercer survived surgery. He agreed to testify about Edward’s network but faced charges for his role.
Vivian and Martin entered protective custody in exchange for opening Halcyon legal channels.
Nora and Elizabeth argued over Sanctuary’s future.
The Foundling Ledger had begun appearing in newsrooms around the world. Public reports exposed illegal adoptions, guardianship fraud, and judicial corruption.
But many names remained redacted to protect children.
Edward released his first public statement from The Covenant.
He accused Alexander of fabricating the ledger to seize control of charitable family-placement systems.
He described himself as the lawful Ashford chairman returning after decades in covert government service.
Several corporate boards accepted his authority because old charter documents supported him.
Alexander’s empire divided.
Some executives remained loyal.
Others followed Edward to protect contracts.
Hospitals and banks demanded continuity.
The neutral public trust held only part of the infrastructure.
Edward offered stability in exchange for recognition.
Alexander refused.
Employees began losing access to payroll systems.
Markets reacted.
The personal conspiracy became a national crisis.
Emma watched television coverage despite Rebecca’s attempt to shield her.
Commentators called her the disputed heir.
Grace the biological daughter.
Noah the lost son.
No one called them children.
Emma turned off the screen.
“Can we make them stop?”
Alexander sat beside her.
“Not completely.”
“Then tell them our names.”
He issued a public statement with consent from all three.
Emma Ashford.
Grace Mercer-Ashford, retaining the surname of the family who raised her.
Noah Cole-Ashford, honoring Daniel and Sarah Cole.
No ownership claims.
No ranking.
The statement declared the fortune would remain in neutral trust until the children were adults.
Edward responded within minutes.
He released evidence that the neutral trust lacked lawful authority because Alexander was a placed heir.
A court issued an emergency order freezing the transfer again.
The judge’s name appeared in the Foundling Ledger.
Leona prepared an appeal.
Thomas focused on The Covenant.
Satellite tracking placed the vessel in international waters. It was defended by private maritime security and protected through multiple flags.
Direct intervention risked hostages and destruction of original records.
Then Catherine received a call from the ship.
An elderly male voice spoke.
“My granddaughter.”
She nearly ended it.
David Vale continued.
“Edward has told you what the page says. He has not told you why the twins created Halcyon.”
“I don’t care about your explanations.”
“You should. Lena did not build the network to sell children.”
“The ledger proves she did.”
“She built it to find the child Helena stole from her.”
Catherine stopped.
David claimed Lena gave birth to Catherine and wanted to keep her. Helena, believing their father would harm the baby, arranged the placement.
Lena created Halcyon first to trace Catherine.
Over time, the search became a system of control.
“Why tell me?”
“Because Edward plans to kill both twins after they open the ship.”
“Helena is not with him.”
David laughed.
“You still believe there are two women.”
Catherine gripped the phone.
“What does that mean?”
“Lena and Helena have been one public identity for twenty years. One sister died long ago.”
The woman who brought Grace and the woman restrained at the mansion could not both be the same person.
Unless one was an impersonator.
A Halcyon child trained and altered to resemble the dead twin.
Catherine looked toward the secured feed showing Lena in custody.
The woman’s fingerprints had never been compared with the original Vale records because those records were sealed.
Catherine ordered immediate testing.
The result returned within an hour.
The prisoner was not genetically related to Nora.
She was not Lena or Helena.
She was another foundling placed into the Matriarch identity.
The real surviving twin remained free.
Possibly aboard The Covenant.

Possibly closer.
👉 The woman everyone captured as Lena was an engineered impersonator, while the true Matriarch remained hidden behind another identity.
