Chapter 15 - The Baby in the PhotographEmma looked at Catherine.

“You’re my mommy.”
“Yes.”
“But the file says—”
“The file is lying.”
Elizabeth enlarged the hospital image.
The metadata dated it eight years earlier at St. Catherine’s Medical Center in Manhattan. The bracelet displayed Catherine’s surname and Emma’s birth time.
Nora examined the authorization.
The digital signature matched Catherine’s old credential.
“It could be forged,” she said.
Martin, weak but conscious, studied the transaction code.
“Halcyon signatures contain hidden placement identifiers. This one is authentic to their system.”
“That does not make Catherine’s consent authentic,” Thomas replied.
The file listed two infants.
Emma Ashford, daughter of Catherine and Alexander.
E-117, biological parents sealed.
At 2:14 a.m., the infants were allegedly exchanged.
At 4:02 a.m., the unidentified baby left the hospital with the Ashfords.
The original Emma entered Halcyon custody.
Catherine’s face emptied.
“I held my daughter immediately after birth.”
“Could anyone have taken her later?” Nora asked.
Catherine remembered heavy bleeding and emergency surgery. She was unconscious for nearly six hours. Alexander remained with her part of that time but left briefly to meet an attorney concerning the trust.
Emma looked toward the radio.
“Daddy?”
Alexander heard everything from the mansion chamber.
“I saw you after delivery,” he said. “You were wrapped in a yellow blanket.”
The baby in the Halcyon photograph wore a yellow blanket.
“But when did you see me again?” Emma asked.
Alexander searched memory.
“After sunrise.”
After the alleged exchange.
He had never noticed a difference.
Newborn features changed quickly. He had trusted the bracelet and medical staff.
Catherine gripped the terminal.
“Who was in charge of the maternity ward?”
Elizabeth answered.
“Samuel Kline.”
At the mansion, Kline remained unconscious beside the damaged console.
Vivian looked at him.
“He knows.”
Alexander checked the doctor’s pulse.
Alive but weak.
Lena, heavily sedated, smiled from the floor.
“Ask Catherine why Halcyon needed the Ashford baby.”
Catherine turned toward the speaker.
“Tell us.”
“The biological child carried an inherited marker necessary for Elizabeth’s family trust.”
Elizabeth went pale.
The oldest Ashford holdings passed only through verified maternal genetics from Elizabeth’s line. If the original infant disappeared, future control could be contested.
Yet Emma’s trust had functioned for eight years.
Someone had manufactured genetic verification or the exchange file was false.
Martin searched the restored records.
A third document appeared.
GENETIC SUBSTITUTE PROGRAM.
Halcyon had developed methods to falsify lineage testing through corrupted laboratories and swapped biological samples.
Emma’s identity might be legally authentic even if biologically false.
The child heard only one thing.
“Where is the real Emma?”
No one answered.
A search began across the restored archive.
The file showed E-117 receiving the Ashford identity. The original infant was transferred to a Halcyon home in Vermont under the name Grace Mercer.
Current status: unknown.
Emma looked toward Catherine.
“What is my real name?”
Catherine crossed the room and held her shoulders.
“You are Emma.”
“But if another girl—”
“Names are not stolen from children. Adults committed this crime. You did not.”
Emma began crying.
Catherine pulled her close.
For the first time, Emma allowed the embrace.
Elizabeth watched with an expression difficult to read.
Nora noticed.
“You knew there had been an exchange.”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“I suspected the laboratory verification was manipulated.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
“You said nothing.”
“I was trying to locate the other child before destabilizing Emma’s life.”
Emma pulled away from Catherine.
“Everyone keeps waiting to tell me my life.”
Elizabeth had no defense.
Thomas received an alert from the church perimeter.
Halcyon vehicles had stopped outside, but no assault began.
Instead, one passenger stepped from the lead car.
A girl approximately eight years old.
She wore a dark raincoat and held the hand of an elderly man.
The exterior camera zoomed in.
The child had Catherine’s dark hair and Alexander’s gray eyes.
She looked directly toward the hidden entrance.
The elderly man held up a sign.
WE HAVE GRACE. YOU HAVE E-117. EXCHANGE AT DAWN.
Emma stared at the screen.
The other girl stared back through the rain.
Catherine whispered, “My daughter.”
Emma recoiled as though struck.
Catherine realized the words too late.
“I meant—”
Emma backed toward Nora.
“You called her your daughter.”
“You are my daughter too.”
“Too?”
The distinction was unbearable.
Outside, the elderly man removed his hat.
Martin recognized him.
“Dr. Kline’s brother.”
The man who delivered the girl had worked for Halcyon’s genetic program.
His sign changed.
LENA IS NOT THE ONLY MATRIARCH.
A second woman stepped from the vehicle.
Vivian’s age, with the same dark eyes and controlled posture.
Martin stared.
“That’s impossible.”
Nora whispered the name.

“Lena had a twin sister.”
👉 A second girl who appeared to be Catherine and Alexander’s biological child arrived outside Sanctuary, accompanied by the twin sister of the Matriarch no one knew existed.
