Chapter 5 - The Children Halcyon RaisedGlass scattered across the nursery carpet.

Nora dragged Martin behind the bookcase while Emma crawled toward the hidden passage. Another shot struck the wall where Martin had been kneeling.

Alexander shouted through the phone.

“Stay down!”

Nora reached for the brass panel.

The passage door began closing.

Martin caught it with one hand.

“Take me with you.”

“You brought them here,” Nora said.

“I can get Emma into Halcyon’s airfield.”

“That is exactly where they want her.”

“I can get you beneath it.”

Nora studied him.

Blood ran from a cut near his ear. His expensive suit was dusted with plaster and broken glass. He no longer looked like the calm attorney who had carried forged papers into the music room.

He looked like a frightened child wearing an adult body.

Emma touched Nora’s sleeve.

“Let him come.”

Nora looked down.

“Why?”

“He said no when the woman told him to bring me.”

Martin stared at Emma.

The trust in her reasoning seemed to hurt him more than accusation would have.

Nora allowed him into the passage.

The door sealed behind them.

As they crawled, Alexander demanded answers.

Martin spoke between breaths.

He and Vivian had been born to a woman named Lena Laurent in Louisiana. Their mother died when Vivian was four and Martin was six. A family court placed them in temporary care managed by Halcyon.

They were separated immediately.

Martin entered the Doyle family in Maryland. Vivian was placed with the wealthy Laurents in Connecticut.

Both adoptions appeared legal.

Neither was.

Their new families paid “placement contributions” to a Halcyon charitable fund. In exchange, records were sealed and biological ties erased.

Martin did not learn Vivian was his sister until he was twenty-eight.

“How?” Alexander asked.

“The Matriarch introduced us.”

Halcyon had tracked both children into adulthood.

Martin became a lawyer specializing in trusts.

Vivian married wealthy men.

Their careers were not accidents. Halcyon encouraged paths useful to the network.

“They raised you to gain access,” Nora said.

“They told us we could become free if we completed one major acquisition.”

“Emma.”

Martin nodded.

Vivian believed the transfer would pay their final debt to the organization that purchased their childhoods.

“Halcyon tells every child the same thing,” Martin said. “Complete one assignment and you belong to yourself.”

“Has anyone ever become free?” Emma asked.

Martin looked at her.

“No.”

They reached another junction.

Alexander’s connection strengthened.

He told them his aircraft had landed at a military section of Westchester County Airport. His private security team was compromised, so he had contacted only two people he trusted: retired federal marshal Thomas Reed and financial-crimes investigator Leona Park.

“They are approaching the estate from the south,” Alexander said.

Nora shook her head.

“The south tunnel is monitored.”

“I did not say they were using the tunnel.”

A low explosion sounded somewhere beyond the walls.

The mansion shook.

Martin looked alarmed.

“What was that?”

Alexander answered.

“Thomas opening the servants’ entrance.”

For the first time, Emma smiled faintly.

Her father was getting closer.

Then the phone screen changed.

A video call appeared from Vivian.

Emma did not answer.

Vivian’s recorded message began automatically.

She stood inside Alexander’s study. One of the unknown men held the leather bag. The other restrained Mrs. Bell, Emma’s missing nanny, in a chair.

Vivian looked directly into the camera.

“Emma, come to the library in ten minutes or Mrs. Bell leaves this house in the bag.”

Emma’s smile vanished.

Martin closed his eyes.

“She is improvising.”

Nora took the phone.

“Vivian, you have no reason to hurt the nanny.”

Vivian’s image continued, proving the message had been prerecorded.

“I know Nora is with you. I know Martin has become weak. The library door will remain open. Emma comes alone.”

The video ended.

Emma began crawling backward.

“I have to go.”

“No,” Nora said.

“She took care of me when Daddy was gone.”

“It is a trap.”

“I know.”

“Then why would you enter it?”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“Because Mrs. Bell came back when Vivian fired her. She tried to help me.”

Alexander’s voice came through firmly.

“Emma, you are not responsible for rescuing adults.”

“She came for me.”

“And we will go for her.”

“How?”

Alexander instructed Martin to open the document folder.

Inside the false guardianship papers was a small metallic seal used for remote notarization.

Martin removed it.

Alexander recognized the model.

The device carried encrypted access to Halcyon’s legal server. If connected to the mansion network, Leona Park could trace the transfer authorization and identify the buyer’s routing system.

Martin laughed bitterly.

“They gave us their key because they trusted us too little to let us sign manually.”

Nora looked toward the library passage.

“We can use the server connection to trigger a false biometric confirmation. Make them believe Emma entered the library while we reach Mrs. Bell through the ventilation route.”

Alexander approved.

Martin connected the seal to Emma’s phone.

The screen displayed a guardianship file.

At the bottom appeared a buyer identification code.

L.V.-01

Martin went completely still.

“That is impossible.”

“What?” Nora asked.

“The Matriarch’s code.”

Alexander demanded the name.

Martin looked at Emma.

“Lena Vale.”

Nora’s face drained of color.

Her surname was Vale.

Emma stared at her.

Nora whispered, “Lena Laurent was my sister.”

The Matriarch who created Halcyon was not a stranger.
