PART 3

Claire’s attorney, Naomi Brooks, never called twice unless the second call mattered.

Claire stepped a few feet away from the gate, but not far enough to give Logan privacy he had not earned.

Naomi’s voice was crisp.

“Claire, the travel account was not the only one he accessed.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Tell me.”

“He used the same stored credentials to request a corporate concierge package.”

“What package?”

“Jewelry insurance.”

Claire looked at Sienna’s diamond ring.

Her stomach sank.

Naomi continued.

“The engagement ring was insured through your business account under a company asset policy.”

Claire turned slowly.

Sienna was twisting the giant diamond on her finger.

Logan had told her it came from a private family jeweler.

Claire almost laughed.

The man had upgraded nothing.

He had accessorized betrayal with fraud.

Naomi said, “There is more.”

“There always is.”

“He submitted the Europe trip as a client retention retreat.”

Claire stared at Logan.

He was trying to calm his mother now, one hand raised, voice smooth, panic barely hidden beneath it.

Naomi’s voice lowered.

“If those charges went through, it could have triggered tax exposure for your company.”

“So he didn’t just steal from me.”

“No.”

“He tried to make your company carry the liability.”

Claire’s hand tightened around the phone.

For years, Logan accused her of being too careful.

Too serious.

Too focused on contracts.

He said business made her cold.

Now the same caution was the only reason he had not dragged her company into his honeymoon fraud.

Naomi asked, “Do you want airport police involved?”

Claire looked at Ava and Mason.

Both stood near her suitcase now, no longer beside their father.

That answered one question.

Not all.

“Not yet.”

Naomi understood.

“I’m on my way.”

“You’re coming here?”

“Already in a car.”

Claire almost smiled for real.

Naomi did not ask whether Claire needed her.

She appeared.

That was the difference between loyalty and performance.

Claire ended the call.

Sienna marched toward her.

Her cheekbones were flushed with humiliation.

“Is my ring paid for by you too?”

Claire looked at the diamond.

“Not paid for.”

Sienna exhaled in relief.

Claire continued.

“Insured through my company.”

The relief vanished.

Sienna turned toward Logan.

“Logan.”

He snapped, “Don’t listen to her.”

Sienna held up her hand.

“This ring.”

He looked at it.

“It’s a ring.”

“Did you buy it?”

His silence betrayed him.

Sienna’s face crumbled in slow motion.

The slap, the insult, the performance of victory, all of it drained from her.

She looked suddenly like a woman who had walked onto a stage and learned the script was written against her too.

Claire did not forgive her.

But she saw her clearly for the first time.

Not powerful.

Decorated.

Logan’s sister, Marcy, whispered, “Logan, what did you do?”

Logan turned on the family.

“I handled things.”

“With Claire’s money?” Marcy asked.

He pointed at Claire.

“She built that company while we were married.”

Claire’s voice cut through the gate.

“I built it while you spent investor dinners pretending to be the visionary.”

The gate went quiet again.

Claire continued.

“I took the meetings.”

“I signed the payroll.”

“I mortgaged my mother’s house to keep the firm alive in year two.”

“I missed school plays because you said clients liked me better and then told the kids I chose work over family.”

Ava looked at her father.

Mason’s jaw tightened.

Claire felt the truth leaving her body like poison finally draining.

“You walked out after the company became valuable.”

“You called it our sacrifice.”

“But every sacrifice was mine until there was profit.”

Logan’s face hardened.

“You always make yourself the victim.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“I made myself useful.”

“That was my mistake.”

Sienna whispered, “Logan, tell me this is not true.”

He looked at her.

Then at the gate agent.

Then at his parents.

Then at his children.

The performance options had run out.

He chose anger.

“Fine.”

He stepped toward Claire.

“You want to ruin everyone’s trip because you’re bitter?”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“You still think this is about a trip.”

At that moment, the airline agent returned with a supervisor.

The supervisor held a tablet.

“Mr. Monroe, we’ve received a fraud alert associated with the reservation.”

Logan went pale.

Sienna stepped away from him.

Claire looked at the boarding door.

Passengers were almost finished boarding.

The Europe trip was leaving without them.

And for once, Logan could not charm his way past a locked gate.

Continue to PART 4 to see airport security get involved, the family’s luxury trip collapse in public, and Claire decide what to do about her children’s tickets.
