Claire brought the children home to the house Logan once called too quiet.
It was not too quiet anymore.

That night, Ava slept in her old room for the first time in four months.
Mason fell asleep on the living room couch with his shoes still on.
Claire covered him with a blanket and stood there for a while, watching his face soften into sleep.
Naomi stayed at the kitchen table with a laptop, sorting documents as if she had moved in for battle.
The slap mark on Claire’s cheek had faded from red to purple.
Naomi noticed.
“Do you want to file assault charges?”
Claire looked toward the hallway where her kids slept.
“Not tonight.”
“Claire.”
“I’m not saying no.”
Naomi nodded.

At 11:18 p.m., Sienna called.
Claire almost ignored it.
Then Naomi said, “Answer on speaker.”
Sienna’s voice sounded hoarse.
“He used my credit too.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Naomi began typing.
“How much?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Sienna cried once, then steadied herself.
“He opened a joint travel line after the courthouse ceremony.”
“Using the spousal acknowledgment?”
“Yes.”
Naomi’s eyes sharpened.
“Send everything.”
“I already did.”
Claire looked at Naomi.
Naomi gave a small nod.
Sienna continued.
“He said the Europe trip was paid because he had settlement funds clearing.”
Claire said nothing.
Sienna’s voice broke.
“I believed him.”
Claire finally spoke.
“Because you wanted to.”
Sienna went silent.
Then she said, “Yes.”
No excuses.
That mattered more than tears.
Sienna sent the documents.
By midnight, Naomi confirmed Logan had attempted to use Sienna’s new marital status to secure a luxury credit line while still drawing from Claire’s corporate travel account.
He had not married Sienna only for love.

The next morning, Claire told Ava and Mason part of the truth.

They sat at the kitchen island with untouched pancakes between them.
Claire said, “Your father has been using money and stories to make people see what he wants them to see.”
Mason stared at his plate.
“Did you know?”
“I suspected.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
Claire took longer with that answer.
Because the easy answer would make her look noble.
The real answer was messier.
“I thought protecting you meant not making you choose sides.”
Ava whispered, “But we chose his side because he talked and you didn’t.”

“Yes.”

Mason’s voice was quiet.

“I wish it had not taken that.”

“I wish she hadn’t hit you.”

“So do I.”
Later that day, the company bank confirmed recovery of most pending charges because Claire revoked authorization before final settlement.
The travel agency froze the reservation.
The hotels canceled.
The villa owner threatened legal action against Logan personally.
Naomi enjoyed that email more than she admitted.
By evening, Logan had called seventeen times.
Claire answered none of them.
Instead, she watched a movie with Ava and Mason, though no one followed the plot.
At the end, Mason said, “Can we go somewhere someday?”
Claire looked at him.
“Where?”
He shrugged.
“Maybe not Europe.”
Ava smiled faintly.
“Maybe the lake.”
Claire felt tears sting her eyes.
“The lake sounds perfect.”
Her phone buzzed again.
This time it was not Logan.
It was Sienna.
One message.
I filed for annulment.
A second message followed.
I also gave Naomi everything.
Claire stared at the screen.
Then she placed the phone face down.
