Chapter 1 - THE SECOND SHAPEMaya Bennett’s fingers tightened around the edge of the examination bed as another wave of pain twisted through her abdomen.

“Mom… please make it stop hurting.”
Claire gripped her daughter’s ankle beneath the thin hospital blanket. Maya’s skin looked almost colorless under the ultrasound-room lights, except for the feverish pink spreading across her cheeks.
Dr. Nathan Lawson did not answer.
He moved the ultrasound probe slowly over the lower right side of Maya’s abdomen, then returned to the same place. The pale shape on the monitor appeared again—smooth, oval, and too sharply defined to be natural tissue.
Lawson enlarged the image.
His face turned grave.
“The scan shows there’s something inside her.”
Claire shot out of her chair so violently that it struck the wall.
“Inside her? What does that mean?”
Before Lawson could answer, Robert Hayes burst through the door.
Claire’s husband had driven separately after receiving her message. He wore his gray office coat over an untucked shirt, and fury already burned across his face.
He snatched Maya’s intake form from the counter.
“She’s been lying for weeks—this is another performance!”
Maya recoiled.
Nurse Emma Reed stepped between Robert and the examination bed.
“Back away from her.”
Robert pointed at the monitor.
“You don’t know what she’s like at home. She invents pain whenever she wants attention.”
Lawson slammed the clipboard onto the counter.
“Then explain why the substance surrounding it matches medication prescribed to you.”
Silence swallowed the room.
Emma placed Maya’s blood tubes inside a sealed specimen bag.
Robert’s expression changed from rage to terror.
A small prescription bottle slipped from his coat pocket, struck the floor, and rolled beneath the ultrasound machine.
Maya lifted one trembling hand and pointed at it.
“He gives me those at night.”
Claire stared at Robert.
“You told me they were vitamins.”
“They were supposed to prevent inflammation.”
“Inflammation from what?”
Robert looked toward the monitor instead of answering.
The pale structure moved slightly as Maya gasped.
Lawson repositioned the probe.
A second hidden shape appeared behind the first.
This one was smaller and darker, with a thin line extending from it toward a major blood vessel.
Lawson reached for the emergency phone.
The examination-room door locked from outside.
Emma tried the handle.
“Someone just sealed us in.”
Robert stepped backward.
Claire moved in front of Maya.
“What did you put inside my daughter?”
“I didn’t put it there.”
“But you knew it existed.”
Robert’s eyes filled with panic.
“I knew about one.”
Lawson turned from the monitor.
“There are two.”
Robert whispered something under his breath.
Claire seized his coat.
“What did you say?”
He looked toward Maya.
“The second one was never supposed to activate.”
The ultrasound monitor flickered.
A small green indicator appeared beside the darker shape, pulsing in rhythm with Maya’s heartbeat.
Then Robert’s phone began ringing.
The caller identification showed only a company code:
