Chapter 10 - THE ORIGINAL SUBJECTGrace’s officers entered the basement from opposite corridors.

They found David and the substitute inside an abandoned neonatal research wing.

Neither man carried the gun when police arrived.

It rested on the floor between them.

The substitute identified himself as Eric Vale.

He had undergone facial reconstruction after Caligo selected him for a long-term identity study. Unlike Jonathan, Eric was not related to David.

His appearance, voice, posture, and habits had been manufactured.

Eric claimed he helped David enter the hospital because Caligo’s board planned to destroy Maya’s second pod during the midnight sale.

“Why help him?” Grace asked.

“Because they promised me a real identity after the program ended.”

“And?”

“They created another replacement.”

Eric had discovered a younger man being trained to take his place.

Caligo replaced its substitutes as easily as its patients.

David carried the medical case into Maya’s room under armed escort.

Claire saw her husband’s face for the first time in four years.

He looked thinner, older, and less familiar than Jonathan had.

Real life had changed him in ways a trained substitute could not imitate.

Maya watched from the bed.

“Are you my father?”

David stopped several feet away.

“Yes.”

“Prove it.”

He did not approach.

“I can’t prove fifteen missing years in one room.”

“Four years.”

“For you.”

He looked toward Claire.

“For me, Caligo started before you were born.”

David revealed that Claire’s prenatal agreement was not the beginning of M-15.

The project started with Claire herself.

During her childhood, she suffered repeated abdominal pain and fainting spells. Her parents told her doctors never found a cause.

Caligo’s predecessor operated the clinic that treated her.

David discovered the records while investigating the company.

“You were Subject M-0,” he said.

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“They collected your cells at fourteen. They altered your immune response. Maya inherited the result.”

The company did not select Maya randomly.

She was the second generation of a continuing experiment.

David opened the medical case.

Inside was a third EchoPair device removed from an unidentified patient.

Its serial number was older than Maya’s by twenty-one years.

The tissue attached to it matched Claire’s DNA.

“This came from where?” she asked.

David looked toward the scar beneath her ribs.

Claire touched it instinctively.

Her parents had told her the scar came from an emergency gallbladder procedure when she was sixteen.

David said the operation had implanted Caligo’s first adolescent reservoir.

It was reportedly removed after two years.

The device in his case proved otherwise.

Someone had removed it recently.

“From whom?” Grace asked.

David answered:

“Not Claire.”

The tissue match was too complete to belong to an ordinary relative.

Caligo had maintained another biological subject created from Claire’s cells.

A clone was impossible, Lawson said immediately.

David corrected him.

“Not a clone. An embryo.”

Before destroying Claire’s stored fertility samples, the research program created two embryos with nearly identical maternal genetic profiles.

One became Maya.

The other was carried by a Caligo surrogate.

Claire stared at him.

“Maya has a sister?”

David looked toward the trauma-room window.

“She was raised as M-16.”

Maya’s monitor flickered.

A second patient chart appeared beside hers.

M-16 — ACTIVE.

The location field showed the room directly beneath them.

Grace ordered officers downstairs.

The hidden room was empty.

A warm examination bed stood beneath an active ultrasound machine. A gray hoodie lay on the floor beside a hospital wristband.

The name printed on it was:

MAYA BENNETT.

Claire looked toward her daughter’s wrist.

Maya’s band carried the same hospital number.

Two patients had been admitted under one identity.

Lawson enlarged the most recent scan from the empty room.

The image showed the same paired devices inside another teenage girl.

The second girl’s condition was more advanced.

A note appeared beneath the scan:

TRANSFER M-15 STABILIZER TO M-16.

Claire understood the sale’s true purpose.

Caligo planned to remove Maya’s smaller pod and use its engineered cells to save the hidden subject.

The company had designed a final forced choice between two children.

Maya whispered:

“No one takes it.”

Claire took her hand.

“No one.”

The hospital lights dimmed.

Every locked door released simultaneously.

A teenage girl stepped into the trauma-room corridor wearing Maya’s gray hoodie.

Same height.

Same pale blue eyes.

Same scar beneath the ribs.

She looked enough like Maya to silence everyone.

David backed toward the wall.

“That isn’t M-16.”

Claire stared at him.

“You said Maya had one sister.”

“I was told there were only two embryos.”

The girl opened her hand.

Inside was Robert’s pill bottle.

She looked directly at Claire.

“Mom, they’ve been calling me Maya too.”

Behind her, another identical girl appeared at the end of the corridor.

Then a third ultrasound chart activated at the nurses’ station.

M-17 — DEVICE PAIR ACTIVE.

The examination-room door locked again.

From somewhere inside the walls, Dr. Kane’s voice whispered:

“Only one of them was born outside the program.”
