Chapter 7 - DAVID’S CONDITIONSClaire pressed the phone against her ear.

“David?”
A long silence followed.
Then the man breathed her name.
No recording could have copied the exact hesitation.
He mentioned the blue paint they chose for Maya’s nursery. The broken radiator they never repaired. The private joke Claire made during their first date.
It was him.
“Where are you?”
“Not safe.”
“They told me you died.”
“I nearly did.”
“Why didn’t you come home?”
“Because Caligo put a device inside me too.”
David explained that the private ambulance took him to an underground research facility. His injuries were severe, but survivable.
Caligo possessed his stolen report and knew Maya’s prenatal samples made her a future subject.
They forced him to choose.
Cooperate with the EchoPair program, or Caligo would implant Maya without any safeguards he might provide.
“You believed them?” Claire asked.
“I saw her surgical order.”
“You still let us bury you.”
“If I contacted you, they said the implantation would happen immediately.”
“It happened anyway.”
“Three years later.”
“You call that success?”
David’s silence answered.
He had delayed the harm.
He had not stopped it.
Like Robert, he built his moral defense around the time he believed he had purchased.
“What is inside the second device?” Claire asked.
“My biological control sample.”
The metallic pod held engineered cells derived from David’s blood. They produced a protein that reduced Maya’s inflammatory reaction to the reservoir.
Caligo designed the pair so the child’s body became dependent on the implanted cells.
That dependence discouraged removal.
The company could claim every surgery risked killing the subject.
“Can Lawson take it out?”
“Not while it’s heating.”
“Give us the shutdown code.”
“I will.”
“What do you want?”
“The memory wafer from the first device.”
Claire looked through the glass toward the sealed evidence container.
“No.”
“It contains the location of every surviving subject.”
“Then police need it.”
“Caligo has people inside the police department.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“You want me to trust you after fifteen years of silence.”
“I want Maya alive.”
“So do I. That does not make every choice yours.”
David finally gave Claire the first half of the shutdown code.
The heating slowed but did not stop.
He demanded the wafer be delivered to an address near the Schuylkill River in exchange for the second half.
Grace prepared a duplicate device while the real evidence remained sealed.
Claire volunteered to make the delivery.
Lawson objected.
Maya was still unconscious after surgery.
“You may not be here when she wakes.”
Claire looked toward her daughter.
For years, men had justified leaving Maya by claiming absence protected her.
Claire refused to repeat it.
“Send Robert.”
Robert heard the decision.
“He’ll kill me.”
“Then help police end the program you helped preserve.”
Robert agreed.
He carried the duplicate wafer to the meeting point under surveillance.
A man wearing a surgical mask approached beneath an abandoned rail bridge.
Robert whispered, “David?”
The stranger removed the mask.
He resembled David, but a scar divided his chin and his left eye moved stiffly.
Claire watched through the police feed.
“That isn’t him.”
The man seized Robert.
Shots struck the surveillance van’s tires.
Police rushed forward as both men disappeared through a maintenance tunnel.
Robert’s microphone remained active.
A woman’s voice echoed underground.
Dr. Kane.
“You should have brought Claire.”
Robert answered:
“She stayed with Maya.”
“That was always her weakness.”
Claire’s phone rang again.
David sounded panicked.
“The man at the bridge is my brother.”
Claire froze.
David had never mentioned a brother.
“He doesn’t have one,” Grace said.
David replied through the speaker:
“Caligo created one from my identity.”
The company had trained a substitute using David’s medical records, voice samples, and facial surgery. The substitute signed documents and appeared before witnesses while the real David remained confined.
“He’s the person Robert saw after the crash,” David said. “Not me.”
Claire remembered Robert insisting he had seen David loaded into the ambulance.
He may have seen the replacement prepared to establish a false survival narrative if needed.
The second half of the shutdown code arrived.
Lawson entered it.
The heating stopped with four minutes remaining.
Maya opened her eyes.
She looked toward Claire.
“Dad called me before surgery.”
Claire leaned closer.
“What did he say?”
May you like
“He said the man on the phone isn’t my dad.”
👉 David saved Maya’s implant remotely, but Maya claimed someone else had been using her father’s voice.
