Later, he told her he was David.
He knew family details because Robert supplied them through weekly reports.
“Did you believe him?” Claire asked.
“Sometimes.”
“What changed?”
“He called me Margaret.”
Margaret was Claire’s middle name.
David knew it, but he had never called her by it. Caligo’s prenatal file listed her as Margaret Claire Bennett.
The caller was reading from records.
Maya had never spoken to her biological father.
The current voice could still be David—or another carefully trained substitute.
Grace raided the underground structure beneath Caligo’s demolished campus.
Police found medical equipment, living quarters, and a central room containing twelve EchoPair receivers.
Only three remained active.
M-15 belonged to Maya.
One belonged to an unknown seventeen-year-old in Ohio.
The final signal originated beneath the campus itself.
Officers opened a sealed patient room.
A man lay inside connected to dialysis equipment, oxygen, and a complex infusion system.
His records identified him as David Bennett.
DNA testing would take hours.
Claire viewed him through a secure camera.
His hair had grayed. One side of his body appeared weak. A surgical scar crossed his forehead where the crash had injured him.
He opened his eyes when the camera moved.
“Claire?”
The voice matched the call.
She did not let recognition replace verification.
“What did we name the dog we never adopted?”
He smiled faintly.
“Roosevelt. You said it was too dignified for a beagle.”
Claire began crying despite herself.
David was alive.
Police found Dr. Kane beside the control room, unconscious from a sedative injection.
Robert and the scarred substitute were gone.
Kane survived.
At the hospital, she refused to speak until offered legal protection.
Grace promised nothing.
Kane revealed that Caligo’s program had been larger than EchoPair. The company studied how families reacted when medical danger was hidden behind trusted relationships.
Robert was assigned to Claire.
Beth Crawford was assigned to Maya’s school.
Aaron Lawson controlled surgery.
David was kept alive as scientific material and emotional leverage.
“The devices were only half the trial,” Kane said. “The other half measured obedience.”
Claire stared at her.
“You watched a child suffer to study whether adults would question authority.”
“Caligo believed family compliance determined treatment success.”
“You created the danger that required compliance.”
“Yes.”
The honesty was monstrous.
Kane claimed the smaller pod should not be removed yet. Maya’s body had become dependent on proteins produced by David’s engineered cells.
An abrupt removal could trigger a severe immune crisis.
Lawson’s independent team confirmed the risk.
The implant that violated Maya’s body was also temporarily helping keep her stable.
Claire refused Caligo’s false choice.
They would develop a medically supervised transition plan using separately manufactured medication.
No one would leave the device inside merely because the company designed dependence.
Kane agreed to provide the formula.
In exchange, she wanted protection from Caligo’s board.
“Who leads the board?” Grace asked.
Kane looked toward Dr. Lawson.
“His father.”
Lawson’s face tightened.
“My father is dead.”
Kane smiled.
“That was the first identity Caligo replaced.”
Malcolm Lawson had never died. Aaron staged the funeral, and Nathan helped preserve the story by signing the hospital records.
Lawson denied knowing.
Grace retrieved his father’s death certificate.
Nathan’s signature appeared as attending physician.
“You certified your own father’s death,” Claire said.
“I certified a body presented under his name.”
“Did you see his face?”
“The family requested a closed casket.”
“You accepted that?”
Lawson looked toward Maya.
“Yes.”
Another adult had chosen not to examine the truth because the official explanation protected him from pain.
The DNA result from the underground patient arrived.
The man was biologically related to Maya.
But not as her father.
He was David Bennett’s identical twin.
A twin Claire had never known existed.
The man in the campus bed was another substitute prepared long before the crash.
