Chapter 6 - THE FIRST REMOVALMaya’s condition deteriorated overnight.

The larger reservoir had begun leaking into surrounding tissue. Her fever climbed, her blood pressure fell, and pain medication barely touched the cramping.

Surgery could no longer wait.

Lawson recommended removing the failing reservoir while leaving the smaller device temporarily in place.

Claire studied him.

“How do I know you are not part of this?”

“You don’t.”

He did not ask for trust.

He requested independent surgeons, external observers, and continuous recording of the procedure. Every instrument and tissue sample would be sealed under police supervision.

Claire agreed because Maya needed help.

Robert asked to see her before surgery.

Maya refused.

He accepted the refusal without argument.

“I deserve that,” he said.

Grace remained with him while Claire accompanied Maya to the operating suite.

“You’re going to be there when I wake up?” Maya asked.

“Yes.”

“Even if they find something bad?”

“Yes.”

“Even if Robert says I lied?”

Claire touched her daughter’s hair.

“Robert does not decide what is true anymore.”

The surgeons removed the reservoir after two tense hours.

It was wrapped in thick scar tissue and attached to a mesh-like patch that had gradually released medication into Maya’s abdomen.

The object carried no manufacturer name.

A serial number matched Caligo’s EchoPair files.

Inside the outer shell, investigators found something unexpected.

A memory wafer.

The device had not merely delivered medication and collected biological readings. It stored audio from a vibration-sensitive microphone attached to Maya’s abdominal wall.

For three years, it had recorded voices around her.

Breakfast conversations.

Doctor visits.

Arguments.

Robert administering pills.

Claire comforting her daughter.

Maya crying alone.

Caligo had turned her body into a surveillance device.

Emma left the operating room in tears.

“They heard everything.”

Claire stared at the sealed object.

“Who?”

The wafer contained thousands of encrypted recordings. One recent file had been left unprotected.

Robert’s voice spoke inside Maya’s bedroom.

“The first pod is failing.”

A woman answered through his phone.

“Then increase the oral dose.”

“She’s asking questions.”

“Use the anxiety history.”

“What happens when Claire notices?”

The woman laughed.

“She signed before the girl was born. The mother is more valuable than the child.”

The voice belonged to Dr. Kane.

Robert had continued communicating with her long after his Caligo contract supposedly ended.

Grace confronted him.

He admitted that Kane threatened to deactivate the smaller device if he stopped cooperating.

“What does deactivation do?” Grace asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You gave Maya pills for three years based on a threat you didn’t understand?”

“I saw what happened to Paige.”

“You never independently verified why she died.”

“No.”

“You never told Claire.”

“No.”

“You never called police.”

“No.”

Robert had convinced himself he alone stood between Maya and death.

That belief made every new act of control feel necessary.

The first device also contained David Bennett’s voice.

A recording dated three months after his supposed death began with machinery humming around him.

David sounded weak.

“Claire, if you hear this, they kept me alive because my blood stabilizes M-15.”

Another man spoke nearby.

Aaron Lawson.

“She’ll never know where you are.”

David answered:

“Then Maya will.”

The file ended with coordinates outside Philadelphia.

Grace searched the location.

It belonged to a Caligo research campus demolished two years earlier.

Satellite records showed one underground structure remained.

Before police could organize a raid, the smaller device inside Maya changed its signal.

The hospital monitor displayed a countdown.

Forty-eight minutes.

Lawson examined the scan.

“It’s heating.”

Claire stared.

“Why?”

Robert heard through the open speaker and began shouting.

“They’re wiping the second pod.”

If its internal battery overheated near Maya’s blood vessels, it could rupture them.

Removing it immediately might do the same.

The only person with the shutdown code was Dr. Kane.

Then Claire’s phone rang.

A man’s voice said:

“Do not give the device to police.”

She recognized the voice despite fifteen years of grief.

May you like

David.

👉 Maya survived the first surgery, but her supposedly dead father called as the second implant began heating inside her.
