Chapter 5 - THE MUGPolice secured the house before Daniel could return.

Not as a giant crime scene.
They obtained consent from me for specific access, then later warrants where required.
The kitchen mug was still in the sink.
Rinsed.
That bothered Rebecca.
Who rinsed it?
Evelyn said she did.
Why?
“Because Claire never cleans up after herself.”
Even after my fall?
Apparently.
The mug still had trace residue in a hairline crack near the handle.
Enough for laboratory testing.
No result yet.
The kettle was clean.
Chamomile box.
Honey.
Ordinary.
Then officers found Evelyn’s purse in the guest room.
She had left it when she went to the hospital briefly after my fall, then returned home later.
Inside:
Wallet.
Lipstick.
Reading glasses.
Prescription bottle.
Same medication class found in my blood.
Evelyn had a valid prescription.
That was not a crime.
Millions of people do.
The bottle had fewer tablets than the dispensing record suggested it should.
That was not proof either.
People take prescriptions irregularly.
Lose pills.
Split bottles.
Forget.

Rebecca refused to call it solved.
I hated her again.
