The Teddy Bear Was Watching / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - THE GIRL BEHIND LILY’S DOOR Claire ran from the auditorium.

Daniel followed while Detective Quinn’s tactical team breached the school. Rebecca disappeared through the stage tunnel before officers reached her.

Emma remained beside the fallen bear.

Aaron entered despite orders and stopped several feet from his daughter.

He did not touch her.

“Can I come closer?”

Emma stared at him.

Years of warnings battled the memory of his face.

Finally, she nodded once.

That small permission was all he received.

Claire reached the command vehicle and called the officer protecting Lily.

No answer.

The live bedroom feed still showed the closet door open.

The bed was empty.

Claire screamed her daughter’s name into the phone while Daniel drove toward their house with police vehicles behind them.

The front door stood open when they arrived.

Birthday balloons moved gently in the hallway draft.

The cake remained in the kitchen with six burned candles leaning into the frosting.

Claire ran upstairs.

Lily’s room was empty.

The officer lay unconscious beside the rocking chair. Her pulse remained strong. A sweet chemical smell clung to a cloth near her hand.

On the bed sat the original birthday bear.

Police had sealed it inside an evidence container hours earlier.

The container remained locked downstairs.

Aaron opened it.

Empty.

Someone had replaced the bear before the school operation.

The toy on Lily’s bed wore a new pink ribbon.

A smartphone had been stitched beneath it.

Claire cut the seam.

The screen activated.

Lily appeared inside a moving vehicle, clutching her knees. She looked frightened but conscious.

A woman sat beside her wearing Evelyn’s face.

Claire recognized the slight difference in the jaw.

The impersonator.

Daniel leaned close.

“Lily, can you hear us?”

The girl looked toward something beyond the camera.

Then she signed carefully.

I’m pretending not to know her.

Claire forced herself to stay calm.

“Good, sweetheart. Keep watching everything.”

The woman beside Lily turned toward the phone.

She peeled the silicone mask away.

Rebecca Shaw looked directly at Claire.

“You opened the archive too early.”

“Bring Lily back.”

“Emma chose Aaron. Now Lily completes the comparison.”

“There is no comparison.”

“Two girls raised under surveillance. One separated from her father. One kept with both parents. Northbridge needs to know which child remains more controllable after discovery.”

Claire gripped the phone.

“My daughter is not your evidence.”

“Neither was Emma. That never stopped Evelyn.”

The call shifted to a second camera.

Evelyn sat restrained inside the old Sentinel demonstration house. A pink ribbon bound one wrist to the chair.

Rebecca had taken her too.

On the wall behind Evelyn was Thomas Hale’s complete archive.

Claire’s father had documented hundreds of families.

Judges receiving private payments.

Therapists coaching children.

Parents purchasing edited recordings.

And a final file labeled:

C-0 SUCCESSOR — CLAIRE HALE

Rebecca smiled.

“Your father didn’t build the archive to destroy Northbridge.”

Claire stared at the file.

“What was it for?”

“To choose who would control it after him.”

“That’s a lie.”

Evelyn struggled against the restraint.

“Claire, don’t listen to her!”

Rebecca turned the camera toward Evelyn.

“Tell her why Thomas placed her biometric profile above every founder.”

Evelyn’s silence lasted one second too long.

Claire felt the truth approaching before she heard it.

Thomas had not merely opposed Northbridge.

During its earliest years, he helped design the behavioral scoring system. He believed covert observation could identify dangerous homes before children were seriously harmed.

Then he discovered clients manipulating the scores for custody and money.

He created the archive as both evidence and control mechanism.

Claire’s profile inherited his master authority.

The birthday bear had completed her access.

Rebecca held up a tablet.

One command could release every hidden recording to federal investigators.

Another could erase the archive permanently.

A third would transfer complete control to Claire.

“Choose,” Rebecca said.

“No.”

“If you expose everything, innocent children lose medical privacy. If you erase it, guilty adults walk free. If you take control, you become what your father intended.”

Claire looked at Lily on the adjacent screen.

Her daughter was watching carefully.

Claire understood what Rebecca wanted.

Another forced choice.

Another family member made responsible for harm someone else had designed.

“I choose Lily,” Claire said.

Rebecca’s smile vanished.

“That is not one of the options.”

“It is the only option that matters tonight.”

Daniel’s phone began vibrating.

The Northbridge network was sending location data from the moving vehicle.

Aaron traced the signal.

“It’s coming from three vehicles.”

Decoys.

Emma entered Lily’s room holding the second teddy bear.

She touched the pink ribbon and listened to its electronic pattern.

“Rebecca taught me the route code,” she said.

Aaron looked at her.

“Can you find Lily?”

Emma nodded toward Claire’s phone.

“The bear isn’t transmitting from the car.”

“Then where?”

“From the person holding the camera.”

On-screen, Rebecca was seated beside Lily.

But the camera’s reflection in the window showed no woman beside the child.

Only a mounted screen playing Rebecca’s image.

Lily was alone in the back seat.

Someone else was driving.

The reflection showed a man’s hands on the wheel.

Daniel enlarged the image.

A Sentinel founder’s ring gleamed on one finger.

Evelyn saw it through the live connection and stopped struggling.

“That ring belonged to Thomas Hale.”

Claire stared at her.

“My father died.”

Evelyn’s face turned ashen.

“We buried a body after the warehouse fire.”

“You saw him?”

“No.”

The driver lifted one hand and adjusted the mirror.

For half a second, Claire saw his eyes.

Her own eyes.

An older man’s voice came through Lily’s phone.

“Claire, Rebecca thinks she controls the comparison.”

Lily looked toward the front seat.

The man continued:

“She doesn’t know Cub Six was always watching her.”

Every screen in the room went black except one.

A new live feed appeared.

Rebecca stood alone inside the demonstration house, no longer beside Evelyn.

Someone locked the door behind her.

Thomas Hale’s voice whispered through the teddy bear:

“Bring me Emma, Lily, and the original drive. Then I’ll tell Claire which family I was truly observing.”

Lily’s video returned.

The vehicle turned through a set of steel gates.

Behind them stood a brightly lit house identical to Claire and Daniel’s home.

Every room had been reconstructed.

Inside the replica living room, another birthday cake waited beneath six unlit candles.

A child sat at the table with her back to the camera.

She wore Lily’s dress.

The girl slowly turned.

Emma gasped.

Claire stopped breathing.

It was not Lily.

It was Mia Grayson—the missing child Daniel had carried in the altered Sentinel footage.

Mia looked directly into the camera and raised one finger to her lips.

Then the gates closed behind Lily’s vehicle.
