The Teddy Bear Was Watching / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - DANIEL’S MISSING NIGHT Daniel denied remembering the trip.

Aaron nearly struck him.

Detective Quinn forced the brothers apart while Claire moved Lily into another secured room.

The video continued.

Daniel entered the demonstration house carrying a sleeping child. Evelyn followed behind him. A Northbridge physician met them at the basement door.

The footage had no audio.

Daniel left thirty-seven minutes later without the child.

“What happened that night?” Claire asked.

Daniel pressed both hands against his temples.

“I was in Boston.”

“Prove it.”

He had attended a Sentinel investor conference. Hotel records placed him there during the afternoon and the following morning.

There was no confirmed sighting between 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.

The demonstration house stood less than an hour from the conference.

Evelyn watched the footage.

“That isn’t Emma.”

Aaron turned on her.

“The bracelet has her name.”

“It was a simulation.”

“What child did you use?”

Evelyn refused to answer.

Quinn threatened obstruction charges.

Finally, Evelyn admitted Northbridge used child actors to test home-assessment systems. The girl wore Emma’s bracelet because engineers were reconstructing the night she disappeared.

“Why was Daniel involved?”

“He agreed to help identify security failures.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I never agreed.”

“You were exhausted. The doctor gave you something to sleep after the conference.”

Claire understood first.

“You drugged him.”

“A prescribed sedative.”

“You transported him to a staged house while he was impaired.”

“He needed to react naturally.”

Daniel’s missing memory had been manufactured.

Evelyn used him as part of a behavioral reconstruction, then erased the event from his company calendar.

The child in his arms was supposedly an actor named Mia Grayson.

Detective Quinn searched the name.

No child actor existed.

A missing-person report did.

Mia Grayson vanished from a foster home six years earlier, two months before Emma disappeared.

Northbridge had used a missing child to reenact another child’s disappearance.

Evelyn stared at the report.

“I was told she came through a licensed agency.”

“You never met a guardian?” Claire asked.

“The physician handled it.”

“You didn’t ask?”

Evelyn’s certainty finally fractured.

“No.”

The private physician was Dr. Simon Vale, Northbridge’s director of child assessment. He signed Emma’s emergency custody report and later testified that Aaron showed dangerous obsessive behavior.

Vale died in a boating accident four years earlier.

No body had been recovered.

Aaron laughed bitterly.

“Another convenient disappearance.”

The demonstration-house server contained a medication log from Daniel’s missing night.

He had received a sedative, but the dose should not have erased six hours.

A second drug had been administered.

It was designed to disrupt memory formation.

Daniel had not simply forgotten the child.

Someone wanted him unable to testify about what happened inside the basement.

Aaron opened the facility’s access record.

After Daniel left, Evelyn remained for twelve minutes.

Then Vale entered.

The child remained inside for six more hours.

At dawn, a service van departed through the rear gate.

Evelyn said she never knew.

Aaron asked where the van went.

The file listed the destination as Northbridge Family House Three.

That property currently belonged to Evelyn’s charity.

Claire turned toward her mother-in-law.

“You own the place where the child was taken.”

“I own hundreds of donated properties.”

“And you never examined the one linked to Emma?”

Evelyn looked away.

The omission was an answer.

Police prepared to search Family House Three.

Before they left, the teddy bear activated inside its evidence container.

A child’s voice played through the metal walls.

Emma.

“Uncle Daniel didn’t take me,” she whispered. “He took Lily first.”

Claire froze.

Lily had not been born when Emma disappeared.

Daniel’s face changed.

Aaron slowly opened the video’s hidden metadata.

The timestamp had been altered.

The child Daniel carried into the demonstration house was not recorded six years earlier.
