Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT DANIEL LEFT THE HOUSE Claire checked the family calendar for the night of the real recording.

Daniel had told her he was attending a late company dinner.
He returned after midnight, pale and unusually quiet. When Claire asked whether he had been drinking, he said a client had become ill.
“I wasn’t at dinner,” Daniel admitted.
Aaron’s anger rose again.
“Where were you?”
Daniel had received an anonymous message claiming Emma was alive. The sender instructed him to come to the old Sentinel house alone.
He told no one because the message warned that Aaron would frighten the child into hiding.
Inside the house, Daniel found a sedated girl wearing a hospital bracelet labeled Emma Cross.
Her face was concealed beneath a hood and oxygen mask.
A woman in medical clothing ordered him to carry her into the basement.
“Why would you obey?” Claire asked.
“They said she was having a seizure.”
“You didn’t call an ambulance?”
“They said police had been compromised.”
“You believed exactly what required you to act alone.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“Yes.”
He carried the girl downstairs.
The room was dark.
Someone injected him through his jacket sleeve.
He woke inside his car two hours later with no child nearby and no clear memory of leaving the house.
He hid the incident because he feared Aaron would discover he had lost Emma again.
“You chose your reputation over the truth,” Aaron said.
“I chose cowardice.”
Daniel did not soften the word.
Police examined the jacket he had worn that night. Claire found it at the back of their closet.
A puncture mark remained near the shoulder.
Forensic testing detected the same memory-disrupting drug used during the staged event years earlier.
The people behind Northbridge had repeated their method.
Daniel’s silence allowed them to alter the footage and construct a story around him.
Detective Quinn received results from Family House Three.
The charity property appeared to operate as a temporary shelter for children removed during custody emergencies. Official records listed twenty-two residents over five years.
Neighbors reported seeing far more.
The basement contained soundproof interview rooms and hidden cameras inside stuffed animals.
Police recovered hundreds of recorded sessions.
Children were coached to repeat claims against parents.
Some allegations may have been true.
Others were produced through repetition, reward, isolation, or medication.
Northbridge did not care about truth.
It cared which narrative the paying client needed.
Emma appeared in several videos during the first year after her disappearance.
She repeatedly asked for Aaron.
A counselor told her:
“Your father becomes dangerous when he is worried.”
The statement taught her to interpret his attempts to find her as proof she should remain hidden.
The final video of Emma at Family House Three was recorded four years earlier.
Dr. Vale entered and told her she would be transferred to a “permanent family.”
Evelyn watched from the police command vehicle.
“I funded that house.”
“You funded a pipeline,” Claire said.
“I thought it protected children.”
“You thought the word protection ended your responsibility to inspect what came after.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Aaron searched the counselor list.
One employee remained active at the charity.
Rebecca Shaw, Evelyn’s personal assistant.
Rebecca had access to Claire’s house code, the old Sentinel equipment, the evidence warehouse, and the birthday guest list.
Police tried to locate her.
Her phone was found inside Evelyn’s office.
A printed photograph lay beneath it.
Lily asleep inside her bedroom the previous night.
The camera angle came from beneath the bed.
Claire ran upstairs.
Police searched every inch of the room.
Under the mattress, they found a second teddy-bear eye connected to a storage chip.
The newest recording showed Rebecca standing over Lily at 2:11 a.m.
She placed the gold-wrapped birthday gift inside the closet.
Then another woman entered.
Evelyn.
Claire turned toward her mother-in-law.
Evelyn stared at the footage.
“That isn’t me.”
The second woman had Evelyn’s clothes, hair, height, and face.

She looked directly toward the hidden camera and smiled.
👉 Rebecca had not acted alone—she had brought someone trained to impersonate Evelyn inside Lily’s bedroom.
