The Teddy Bear Was Watching / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - THE GIRL IN THE SUV Police surrounded the black SUV within seconds.

The driver’s door was unlocked.

No one sat behind the wheel.

A video played on a tablet strapped to the passenger headrest, creating the illusion that Emma was inside.

The footage showed her staring through a vehicle window while houses passed behind her.

Detective Quinn paused the image.

“It was recorded earlier.”

Aaron gripped the door frame.

“How much earlier?”

A navigation sign reflected in the glass. The route number placed Emma near an abandoned Sentinel demonstration home forty miles north of Lake Forest.

Evelyn called it the old Sentinel house.

The company had used the property to test cameras, smart locks, and child-monitoring systems in realistic family settings.

It officially closed six years earlier.

The same year Emma disappeared.

Aaron demanded to go immediately.

Quinn refused to move until a tactical team cleared the address.

“Whoever sent this expects you to rush in.”

“My daughter is there.”

“Or they want you to believe she is.”

Claire returned inside to check Lily.

The child sat on the bed holding Daniel’s hand.

She looked less frightened than the adults.

“Did someone come into the closet?” Claire asked.

Lily shook her head.

“The speaker was in there.”

Police found a coin-sized audio unit taped beneath a shelf. It had been planted during Evelyn’s unauthorized visit three days earlier.

Evelyn denied placing it.

Someone else had entered using her code after she left.

The front-door system showed one brief second of an additional figure walking behind her.

A woman in a maintenance uniform.

Her face remained hidden.

Evelyn admitted she had brought a technician from Northbridge to inspect the nursery monitor.

“She told me the unit was inactive.”

“You brought a stranger into Lily’s bedroom,” Claire said.

“She had company credentials.”

“You never verified them independently.”

“No.”

The same blindness passed through every branch of the family.

A uniform.

A form.

A familiar logo.

Enough to make dangerous people appear legitimate.

Aaron searched the teddy bear’s serial number.

It belonged to the unit recovered from Emma’s room after her disappearance.

The police had stored that bear as evidence.

It vanished from the evidence warehouse two years later during a flood.

“Someone kept it,” Daniel said.

“Someone repaired it,” Aaron answered. “And brought it to Lily.”

The bear’s internal memory contained fragments from Emma’s childhood.

Birthday songs.

Bedtime conversations.

Aaron apologizing after arguments.

Emma crying because she wanted both parents to stop fighting.

The people holding her had preserved those sounds for five years.

Claire realized the bear had not been chosen only as a camera.

It was a message to Aaron.

His daughter’s childhood had remained in someone else’s possession.

Detective Quinn received clearance from the tactical team.

The old Sentinel house was empty.

However, its basement servers were active.

A live data stream connected the demonstration home to Claire and Daniel’s house.

The birthday party had been watched from there until moments before police arrived.

Investigators found restraints, children’s headphones, and a wall displaying photographs of families involved in Northbridge custody cases.

Emma’s photograph appeared in the center.

Lily’s had been pinned beside it that morning.

Beneath the photographs was a handwritten schedule:

L-6 BIRTHDAY RESPONSE

AARON RETURN CONFIRMED

EVELYN CASE DELIVERY FAILED

PHASE TWO: PATERNAL CONFESSION

Claire read the words twice.

“Paternal confession means Daniel.”

A new file appeared on Aaron’s laptop.

Video showed Daniel entering the demonstration house six years earlier carrying a small child wrapped in a pink blanket.

The timestamp came three weeks after Emma vanished.

Daniel stared at the footage.

“I have never seen that video.”

Aaron seized his brother’s shirt.

“Who were you carrying?”

Daniel looked at the child’s visible wrist.

A hospital bracelet displayed one name.
