Chapter 9 - THE ORIGINAL CUB SIX DRIVE Aaron opened the original Cub Six drive from Evelyn’s silver case.
The software contained a hidden partition she claimed never to have seen.
Inside was a list of every Northbridge client, subject, judge, evaluator, and family property connected to the surveillance network.
The files were encrypted through six biological profiles.
Daniel.
Aaron.
Evelyn.
Emma.
Lily.
And one person identified only as C-0.
Claire’s photograph appeared beside the final code.
She stared at Evelyn.
“I never worked for Sentinel.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “Your father did.”
Claire’s father, Thomas Hale, had died when she was sixteen. She remembered him as an electrical engineer who traveled constantly and avoided discussing work.
He had designed the first hidden-camera modules used inside Sentinel toys.
After discovering Northbridge intended to place them in private homes without warrants, he copied the project archive.
Weeks later, he died in a warehouse fire.
Evelyn told Claire she had never known him.
That was a lie.
Thomas had worked directly for her.
“Did you cause the fire?” Claire asked.
“No.”
“Did Northbridge?”
“I never proved it.”
“Did you tell my mother why he died?”
“No.”
“Did you recruit Daniel because of me?”
Evelyn looked toward her son.
Daniel understood before Claire did.
Their meeting at a technology fundraiser had not been accidental. Evelyn placed them at the same table because Claire’s identity could unlock her father’s encrypted drive.
Daniel had genuinely fallen in love with her.
But the opportunity had been engineered.
“You built my marriage around a password,” Claire whispered.
“I wanted Thomas’s archive before Northbridge found it.”
“And when you couldn’t access it?”
“I waited.”
Lily’s birth created a new profile combining Claire’s family biometrics with Daniel’s Sentinel access.
The nursery monitor collected voice patterns, facial data, and household signatures.
For six years, Evelyn’s system tried to reconstruct Claire’s father’s encryption through his descendants.
The birthday bear completed the profile.
The second blinking light beneath its paw had not only transmitted footage.
It had copied Claire and Lily’s touch patterns when they held it.
Aaron assembled all six available profiles.
The hidden partition opened partially.
Thomas Hale appeared in an old video.
“If Claire is seeing this, Northbridge has reached my family.”
He described a secure archive containing evidence of child manipulation, illegal recordings, bribed evaluators, and children transferred under false identities.
One file concerned Emma.
Thomas had recorded it years before she was born because Northbridge planned future subject lines around the founders’ families.
Evelyn’s children were designated before they had children of their own.
Aaron’s daughter became A-1.
Daniel’s future child became L-6.
Claire became C-0 because her father’s evidence made her the original outside threat.
“This started before Lily,” Claire said.
“Before Emma,” Aaron added.
Thomas’s video warned that the archive required the missing Cub Six device and the voluntary voice of one child raised inside Northbridge.
Emma.
Rebecca did not merely possess Aaron’s daughter.
She needed Emma to unlock the evidence capable of destroying the entire network.
That explained why Emma remained alive, educated, and close to the system.
She was both victim and key.
Detective Quinn prepared a controlled operation at the closed school despite Rebecca’s false signal.
Claire agreed to carry a duplicated drive.
Daniel would accompany her wearing a wire.
Aaron was ordered to remain behind.
He refused.
Claire faced him.
“If Emma sees you arrive with armed police, Rebecca will use it as proof that everything she taught her is true.”
“She is my daughter.”
“And Lily is mine. That does not give us permission to make every frightened choice for them.”
Aaron’s anger faltered.
He stayed in the command vehicle.
At midnight, Claire and Daniel entered the school.
The hallway lights switched on one by one.
Pink ribbons marked a path toward the auditorium.
Rebecca’s voice came through the speakers.
“Place the drive on the stage.”
Claire obeyed.
A side door opened.
Emma entered holding the teddy bear.
She looked older than the photographs, thinner than the video, and terrified by Daniel’s presence.
“Where is my father?” she asked.
“Nearby,” Claire said. “He came because he loves you. He stayed outside because the choice belongs to you.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
Rebecca appeared behind the stage curtain holding a remote control.
“Ask the girl whether she wants him.”
Claire looked at Emma.
“You don’t have to decide your whole life tonight.”
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
“That is not the protocol.”
“There is no protocol.”
Claire reached toward the drive.
Rebecca pressed the remote.
The school doors locked.
The teddy bear inside Emma’s arms emitted the same electronic click as Lily’s.
A red light appeared beneath its paw.
Emma looked down.
“No,” she whispered. “This one isn’t recording.”
“What is it doing?” Daniel asked.
Emma dropped the bear.
“It’s opening every house.”
Across the command vehicle monitors, dozens of Northbridge properties unlocked simultaneously.
Children began appearing on live feeds.
Some were alone.
Some were restrained.
One room showed Lily asleep at home beside a female police officer.
The closet door behind her opened.
