Chapter 19 - Celeste tells me what Vivian was afraid of

Celeste asked to meet.
Coffee shop.
No diamonds.
No lawyers.
She wore jeans.
I almost did not recognize her.
She said:
“Vivian thinks you hate her.”
“I don’t have enough free time.”
Celeste smiled sadly.
Then:
“She thinks if she gives Noah back, Luke disappears again.”
I stared.
“What?”
“When Noah came to the house, Vivian started functioning again.”
I remembered.
After Luke died, Margot worked.
Celeste fled to Boston.
Vivian organized.
Funeral.
Estate.
Me.
Baby.
Everything.
Celeste continued:
“She built her life around making sure Luke’s son was okay.”
“So she made herself his parent.”
“Yes.”
The directness surprised me.
“Why didn’t you say something?”
“I thought it was temporary.”
“So did I.”
Celeste looked down.
“Then every year it became harder to challenge because challenging it meant admitting we had watched it happen.”
There.
Family systems again.
Not one tyrant.
A room full of people slowly accepting the arrangement because changing it required conflict.
Celeste also told me:
Vivian had been offered an opportunity to support my independent apartment eighteen months earlier through the family foundation’s caregiver-transition fund.
A trust advisor suggested it.
Vivian declined.
Why?
She wrote:
Maintaining current placement is presently more stable for Noah.

No financial motive.
Control disguised as stability.
