Chapter 24 - What happened to the promise

Months after the hearing, Vivian finally answered my original question.

“You promised he would never know.”

We were sitting in my apartment.

Noah was asleep.

Vivian said:

“I didn’t tell him.”

“I know.”

“Then I didn’t break that promise.”

Technically.

Very Vivian.

I looked at her.

“You built a life where I fed him, bathed him, slept beside him when he was sick, carried him after nightmares, and then demanded nobody name what that was.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

“You thought language could control attachment.”

“Yes.”

There.

I asked:

“When he called me Mom in the ballroom, what scared you?”

She answered immediately.

“That everyone would see.”

“See what?”

“That he knew you belonged to him in a way I couldn’t regulate.”

I swallowed.

Then:

“He didn’t know genetics.”

“No.”

“He knew me.”

“Yes.”

The promise had been impossible.

No one needed to tell Noah I was his mother for him to experience me maternally.

He had not exposed a secret fact.

He exposed a secret relationship everyone in the house had been pretending was something smaller.
