Chapter 7 - Six weeks became six months

Ashford House had nineteen bedrooms if you counted staff rooms and old guest suites.

I was given a small apartment in the service wing.

Noah slept with me.

Vivian hired a night nurse for the first two weeks.

My health improved.

I began caring for him fully.

I intended to leave at six weeks.

Then Luke’s estate became complicated.

Not corrupt.

Complicated.

Valuation of his private-company interest.

Insurance.

Trust documentation.

Paternity confirmation requested by the corporate trustee despite Luke’s acknowledgment because the family agreement required formal evidence for a beneficiary.

DNA testing using retained medical material established Luke as Noah’s father.

No dispute.

Then Vivian said the trust’s attorneys wanted a stable guardianship structure while I recovered.

That was not exactly true.

They wanted clarity about who could sign on Noah’s behalf for trust communications.

I could.

As his mother.

Vivian made it sound more alarming.

“You don’t have health insurance through an employer.”

“I’m on continuation coverage.”

“For how long?”

“I’m working on it.”

“You’re living here.”

“Temporarily.”

“You have no independent childcare.”

“I’m his childcare.”

She softened.

“Let me help.”

I signed a limited temporary guardianship authorization allowing Vivian to make medical and administrative decisions if I was unavailable.

It was supposed to last six months.

I understood that document.

Mostly.

My mistake was not signing it.

My mistake was letting Vivian become the person who explained every legal document before I obtained my own lawyer.
