Chapter 5 - Luke died before Noah was born

Luke died when I was thirty-one weeks pregnant.

Car accident.

Rain.

Interstate.

A delivery truck lost part of its load.

Luke swerved.

His vehicle crossed the median.

The details do not improve with repetition.

He was alive when paramedics arrived.

He died in surgery.

No mystery.

No conspiracy.

No drunk driver.

No secret family crime.

Just physics and terrible luck.

I was twenty-six.

Seven months pregnant.

Standing in a hospital hallway when Vivian arrived.

She looked at me.

Then my stomach.

Then said:

“Where is he?”

Nobody had told her yet.

I could not.

Margot arrived next.

Celeste last.

The four of us learned to become a family around a body none of us could bring home alive.

Luke had signed an acknowledgment of paternity during my pregnancy because we were not married.

He had updated beneficiaries on his life insurance.

He had also written me into a limited estate document.

Not a secret fortune.

His personal estate was worth approximately $680,000 after debts and taxes.

A significant amount.

Not enough to turn Noah into a baby billionaire.

Luke also owned a noncontrolling interest in the Ashford family hospitality company.

That interest passed into a trust for his child under existing family agreements.

An independent bank served as corporate trustee.

Vivian did not control the money directly.

Important.

This was not a story where she stole Noah for his trust fund.

Her motives were harder.

She believed the Ashfords were stability.

I was uncertainty.

And after Luke died, she decided stability gave her rights nobody had actually granted.
