Chapter 21 - Noah spends his first night with me outside Ashford House

The court did not hand me Noah dramatically after one hearing.

Good.

He was two.

He had lived his entire remembered life in one house.

The judge appointed a neutral guardian ad litem and ordered a transition plan while the petition continued.

At first:

Daily time with me.

Then full days.

Then one overnight.

I rented a one-bedroom apartment in Stamford.

Leah hated the rent.

I loved the kitchen.

Tiny.

Mine.

For Noah’s first overnight, I bought too much.

New crib.

Books.

Night-light.

Stuffed rabbit.

He arrived with Vivian’s driver and a transition specialist.

Not Vivian.

She said she could not do it.

That angered me.

Then I decided I did not need her performance.

Noah entered.

Looked around.

“New?”

“Yes.”

He touched the sofa.

“Mine?”

I laughed.

“Ours.”

He slept badly.

Woke four times.

Asked:

“Vivi?”

That hurt.

I answered:

“At her house.”

He cried.

I held him.

No triumph.

No:

See, I’m your mother.

He loved Vivian.

That was not betrayal.

At 3:20 a.m., he fell asleep against my chest.

I cried quietly into his hair.

Getting my son back would not mean asking him to lose someone else.

That became my rule.
