Chapter 10 - THE SECOND BENNETT INFANTRachel arrived at the hospital under protective escort.
She stood outside Chloe’s room for several minutes before asking whether the girl wanted to see her.
Chloe said yes.
Rachel entered slowly.
She did not reach toward the bed.
She stopped several feet away and allowed Chloe to study her.
They shared the same eyes.
The resemblance was not perfect, but it carried something deeper than appearance. The same careful tilt of the head. The same habit of pressing thumb to index finger when afraid.
Rachel began crying.
“I am so sorry.”
Chloe’s voice was quiet.
“Did you give me away?”
“No.”
“Did you know where I was?”
“Not until you were two. After that, they convinced everyone I was dangerous.”
“Why didn’t you come back?”
“I tried. Then Thomas showed me a photograph of another baby.”
Chloe looked toward Detective Morgan.
Rachel explained.
She had delivered twin girls at Meridian.
One child, Clara, remained beside her for less than a day.
The second was taken immediately for medical observation. Staff claimed she died.
Rachel never saw a body.
After Clara disappeared, Thomas approached Rachel privately. He showed her a photograph of the second baby alive and threatened to make her vanish too if she continued accusing the clinic.
“He said one daughter would be raised safely if I stopped searching.”
“Which daughter?” Chloe asked.
“He never told me.”
Rachel’s decision had haunted her for sixteen years. She continued searching secretly, but she publicly withdrew several allegations to protect the infant she believed remained alive.
The Meridian ledger identified the second twin as:
C-17—External Continuity Placement.
No name.
No destination.
A notation appeared beside the transfer.
Primary household rejected dual placement. Secondary family approved.
Thomas and Diane took Chloe but refused the second infant.
Another Continuity client accepted her.
Nora had seen C-17’s file at Cedar House.
“She’s alive,” Nora said during a protected video call. “At least she was last year.”
“How do you know?” Chloe asked.
“Because she helped me escape the first time.”
The hidden twin used the name Wren.
She lived in a Continuity residence where older children were trained to supervise younger placements. She had access to transportation schedules and family files.
Wren helped Nora leave Cedar House, but she refused to escape herself.
“Why?”
“She said she had someone younger to protect.”
Investigators searched the Meridian ledger for Wren.
No record existed under that name.
The C-17 file had been removed recently using Dr. Voss’s credentials.
Voss remained in hospital custody, but his attorney challenged further questioning.
Rachel looked toward Chloe.
“You don’t have to find her because she is your sister.”
Chloe frowned.
“Why else would I?”
“Because she may not want to be found yet.”
The statement was painful but respectful.
Biology did not automatically give Chloe authority over another girl’s choices.
But the younger child Wren protected might not have a choice.
Savannah and Lila met for the first time that afternoon.
They stood on opposite sides of the hospital family room, studying the life each might have lived.
Lila had been raised with wealth, private schools, and public affection. Yet Judge Crane monitored every friendship and controlled her medical care.
Savannah had been praised as the Hale family’s success while being forced to conceal Chloe’s suffering.
Neither girl had escaped Continuity.
It had simply assigned them different roles.
Lila handed Savannah a small notebook taken from Cedar House.
“Nora said this belongs to you.”
Savannah opened it.
The first page contained her own childhood handwriting.
The notebook had disappeared from her room when she was eleven.
Thomas had taken it.
Someone else continued writing beneath her entries.
The later handwriting belonged to Wren.
Savannah records what happens inside the Hale house. I record where the children go afterward.
The final entry was dated three days earlier.
Chloe will reach the hospital soon. Thomas is losing control. Move the little girl before Voss activates the last family.
There was an address beneath it.
A suburban home less than five miles from the hospital.
Detective Morgan checked property records.
The house belonged to Dr. Elena Reyes.
Everyone looked toward the physician who had first protected Chloe.
Dr. Reyes stared at the address.
“That was my childhood home.”
“Who lives there now?” Claire asked.
“My mother.”
The doctor’s phone began ringing.
Her mother’s name appeared.
When Dr. Reyes answered, a child whispered:

“Wren said you would know what to do when Chloe found you.”
