By then, Detective Morgan had obtained the contents of the silver lockbox found beneath Thomas’s workshop floor.
Inside were three infant bracelets.
Savannah Hale.
Clara Bennett.
Infant Female—Unknown.
All three came from Meridian Maternity Center.
A photograph showed Diane in a hospital bed holding two newborns.
Thomas stood beside her with one hand on each bassinet.
The date corresponded to Savannah’s birth.
Diane had always said Savannah was born alone.
Savannah stared at the picture.
“Did I have a twin?”
Diane began crying.
“One baby died.”
“Which one?”
“I don’t know.”
The delivery had been complicated. Diane lost consciousness. When she woke, Thomas said one infant had survived and one had died.
He named the survivor Savannah.
Diane never saw the deceased baby.
Years later, she found the third bracelet among Thomas’s papers. He claimed it belonged to another family whose legal case he handled.
“Why did you say ‘other daughter’?”
“Because I heard Thomas speaking to Voss last month. He said the first Hale girl was still useful.”
Savannah’s face tightened.
“The first?”
“I thought he meant you.”
The Continuity files contained codes for two children born on the same date.
S-19.
E-19.
Only Savannah’s file was active.
E-19 was marked:
External placement—identity maintained by partner family.
The unknown girl had not died.
She had been placed elsewhere.
Dr. Reyes examined the medical records.
Diane delivered identical twin girls. One newborn had respiratory complications, but both left the nursery alive.
Thomas allowed another family to take one child.
“Why?” Savannah asked.
Diane looked toward the window.
“Money.”
Thomas and Diane faced heavy debts when the twins were born. Meridian offered to cover hospital costs and provide a substantial payment if one infant entered a confidential adoption.
Diane claimed she refused.
Thomas signed alone.
“You stayed with him after learning that?”
“I didn’t learn until years later.”
“When?”
“The day Rachel Bennett came to our house.”
Diane found hidden adoption ledgers while searching for Clara’s records. She discovered the second twin had been transferred through Meridian.
Thomas threatened to accuse Diane of selling the baby if she exposed him.
Again, the trap worked because part of it was true.
Diane had signed blank financial forms during the delivery.
Her signature appeared on the transfer agreement.
Savannah stood.
“My sister is alive?”
“She may be.”
“Who took her?”
“I never found the name.”
The client list on Nora’s memory card provided a clue.
A payment three days after Savannah’s birth went to a couple named Andrew and Melissa Crane.
Judge Walter Crane and his wife.
Crane had signed several emergency orders protecting Meridian placements from investigation.
His nineteen-year-old daughter, Lila, had the same birth date as Savannah.
A public photograph showed Lila Crane standing beside her parents at a charity gala.
Savannah stared at the screen.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
Same small indentation beneath the lower lip.
Detective Morgan requested a warrant for DNA comparison.
Judge Crane immediately challenged the application.
He claimed political harassment.
Then Lila contacted the hospital herself.
She had seen news of Thomas’s detention and recognized Savannah’s face from a screenshot leaked online.
“My parents always said I was adopted,” she told Claire. “But they refused to tell me where I came from.”
She agreed to testing.
Before the sample could be collected, Lila sent another message.
My father knows Nora. He moved her tonight.
Claire called her.
No answer.
Police arrived at the Crane residence and found the front door open.
The house was empty.
A family photograph had been removed from the wall, leaving a pale rectangle.
On the kitchen counter sat a hospital bracelet labeled E-19.
