Chapter 14 - THE ORIGINAL TAPESWren sent coordinates hidden inside the photograph’s metadata.

The location was not Washington.

It was beneath the old Meridian convent, across from the abandoned maternity wing.

Detective Morgan entered with a tactical team.

The underground room contained the original Continuity archive.

Film reels.

Infant records.

Court orders.

Medication logs.

Recordings of children rehearsing new family histories.

Kessler remained tied to the chair, furious but unharmed.

Mia stood near the server.

Wren positioned herself between the child and the doorway.

The person wearing Voss’s board pin had already fled through a lower tunnel.

“Who was it?” Claire asked.

Wren shook her head.

“He never showed his face.”

“He?”

“Older. American accent. He knew Helen’s founder code.”

Wren had spent years moving between Continuity placements. Kessler claimed to be her adoptive father, but he primarily used her to maintain the network’s records.

When she discovered Chloe’s identity, she began helping Nora, Ivy, and Mia preserve their real names.

“Why didn’t you leave?” Chloe asked later through a secure video connection.

Wren looked exactly like her.

Older in the eyes.

Harder in the voice.

“Because every time I left, they moved someone younger.”

“That wasn’t your responsibility.”

“It became mine.”

“No. They made it feel like yours.”

Wren stared at the screen.

No one had ever offered her that distinction.

Mia explained that she recognized Kessler at the hospital and pretended to comply. He believed Helen had conditioned her successfully.

She led him to the convent because Wren was waiting.

The girls intended to copy the archive and expose Continuity before fleeing.

The unknown man arrived first.

He removed one set of tapes.

Family Zero.

The original case that inspired Helen’s project.

Detective Morgan searched the remaining index.

Family Zero involved three children raised under conflicting identities before Thomas, Diane, or the Hale household entered the system.

The children were listed only by initials:

H.C.

M.V.

R.H.

One file included a photograph.

A young Helen Carr stood beside a boy who looked remarkably like Thomas Hale.

Another child stood between them.

Dr. Elena Reyes recognized him as her father.

The original Continuity subjects had grown up and become its doctors, founders, and operators.

Helen had not invented the system from nothing.

She had survived an earlier version and repeated it.

Thomas had been raised beside her under another identity.

Dr. Reyes’s father escaped and tried to expose them.

The program was generational.

The unknown man who stole the Family Zero tapes might be the surviving adult who created the first experiment.

Wren handed Detective Morgan a sealed medical report.

“This is what Kessler was afraid Chloe would find.”

The report documented Chloe’s injuries from infancy onward.

Not all had occurred in the Hale house.

The first fracture happened when she was four months old at Meridian.

A physician deliberately applied pressure to test whether Rachel would accept the clinic’s false explanation.

When Rachel refused, staff classified her as resistant and removed Clara.

Chloe’s abuse had begun before Thomas took her.

Sixteen years of lies were built around a first injury inflicted by the system itself.

The report carried one final signature.

Dr. Robert Reyes.

Elena’s father.

The man she believed died trying to expose Continuity had signed the infant injury study.

Dr. Reyes looked sick.

“He participated.”

Wren shook her head.

“Read the back.”

A handwritten note appeared beneath the copied signature.

I signed to gain access. Helen knows I am collecting proof. If anything happens to me, my daughter Elena must never be brought into Meridian.

Robert had entered the program undercover.

His fire death may have been retaliation.

But the unknown man had taken the tapes showing whether he truly resisted or merely changed sides later.

The mystery remained.

Back at the hospital, Chloe finally sat across from Wren in person.

The twins studied each other without touching.

“I don’t know what to call you,” Chloe said.

“Wren is the name I chose.”

“Then Wren.”

Savannah stood several feet away.

Wren looked at her.

“You did come back.”

“Three years late.”

“You were drugged.”

“I still left Chloe.”

Wren answered gently.

“You were a child too.”

Savannah began crying.

The reunion remained incomplete but honest.

Then Detective Morgan received an alert from the copied Continuity archive.

Someone had activated a live subject file.

Family Zero resumed.

The target location was Dr. Reyes’s current hospital.

The target patient was Chloe.

The authorization came from a founder account belonging to Robert Reyes.

Elena’s father had been dead for twenty years.

Or so she had been told.

👉 The archive proved Continuity began a generation earlier, and a dead physician’s account had just reactivated the experiment around Chloe.
