PART 1
“She arrived with suitcases and a stolen key… then the deed proved the newborn owned the house.”
Rosa arrived at the blue house with two suitcases, a stolen key, and the confidence of a woman who had never been told no by her youngest daughter.
She did not knock.
She marched up the porch steps in a navy dress, red hair shining under the afternoon sun, and pointed straight at Lucia’s face.
“Move aside.”
“This is family property now!”
Lucia stood in the doorway with baby Emilia asleep against her chest.
Her blonde hair was twisted into a messy bun.
Her cream cardigan hung loose over pale pink pants.
Her eyes were swollen from too many nights without sleep.
But her arms around Emilia did not shake.
Not anymore.
Behind Rosa, Maribel stood crying in a white dress.
Tomás hovered beside her, nervous and silent.
A suitcase sat between them on the porch like an announcement.
They had not come to visit.
They had come to move in.
Lucia looked at the suitcase.
Then at the key in Rosa’s hand.
“That is not your key.”
Rosa laughed.
“It was in your kitchen drawer.”
“That makes it mine.”
Lucia held Emilia closer.
“This house belongs to my daughter and me.”
Rosa’s smile sharpened.
“You have no idea what belongs to you.”
A man stepped into the open doorway behind Lucia.
Gabriel Hayes.
Lucia’s brother-in-law.
Her late husband’s older brother.
He wore a dark shirt and a hard expression that made Tomás look at the sidewalk.
“The police are already inside.”
Rosa froze.
Behind Gabriel, a lawyer in a white blouse opened a legal folder.
Two officers stood in the hall, silent and waiting.
Rosa’s face changed for the first time.
Not fear yet.
Insult.
“You called the police on your own mother?”
Lucia looked down at Emilia.
The newborn slept through everything.
Tiny.
Warm.
Unaware that people had come to steal her first home before she could even open her eyes properly.
The lawyer stepped onto the porch.
Her voice was calm.
“The deed lists only Lucia and baby Emilia.”
Rosa’s mouth opened.
No sound came.
Lucia lifted her chin.
“You brought suitcases to a house my daughter owns.”
The porch went silent.

And for the first time in Lucia’s life, Rosa realized the daughter she had always controlled had locked the door before the storm arrived.
