PART 4
Rosa tried to recover by becoming louder.
She always did.
Volume had been her weapon since Lucia was a child.
If Lucia cried, Rosa got louder.
If Lucia disagreed, Rosa got louder.
If Lucia said no, Rosa got so loud the word no began to feel dangerous.
Now Rosa stood on the porch and pointed at the lawyer.
“That cannot be legal.”
Dana Whitfield did not blink.
“It is legal.”
“She is a baby.”
“She is a legal beneficiary.”
“I am her grandmother.”
“You are not listed on the deed.”
Rosa turned to Lucia.
“You let strangers put my grandchild’s name on documents?”
Lucia felt the old guilt reach for her throat.
Then Emilia made a tiny sound against her chest.
The guilt stopped.
Her daughter needed a mother, not a daughter still asking permission from hers.
Lucia looked at Rosa.
“Noah protected us.”
Rosa’s voice sharpened.
“From me?”
Gabriel stepped forward.
“Yes.”
The word landed like a slap.
Maribel gasped.
Tomás looked away.
Rosa spun toward Gabriel.
“You have no right to speak.”
Gabriel’s face was cold.
“My brother gave me that right when he asked me to protect his wife and daughter.”
Rosa laughed bitterly.
“His wife?”
“She is my daughter.”
Lucia answered before Gabriel could.
“I am both.”
The porch went silent.
Rosa stared at her.
Lucia had never said anything like that before.
Not with witnesses.
Not with police standing behind her.
Not while holding a baby who turned every old fear into something worth fighting.
Rosa gripped the stolen key.
“This key proves she wanted me here.”
Dana looked at the officers.
“That key was removed without permission.”
Rosa’s eyes flashed.
“It was in her drawer.”
Officer Bennett stepped forward.
“Ma’am, did you take the key from inside the residence without the owner’s consent?”
Rosa hesitated.
Lucia saw it.
That tiny pause.
The sound of a lie searching for shoes.
“I am her mother.”
The officer’s face did not change.
“That was not the question.”
Maribel began crying harder.
Tomás whispered, “Rosa, stop.”
Rosa turned on him.
“You wanted this house too.”
Tomás went pale.
The porch shifted again.
Lucia stared at her brother-in-law by marriage.
Then at Maribel.
The suitcases were not only Rosa’s idea.

Everyone had packed something.
