PART 7
Rosa did not cry until the key was gone.
That was when she understood power had physically left her hand.
Her face crumpled.
Not fully.
Rosa never surrendered completely.
But enough to make Maribel rush forward.
“Mom.”
Lucia did not.
That was new too.
All her life, Rosa’s tears had been a fire alarm.
Lucia ran.
Apologized.
Explained.
Comforted.
Fixed.
Paid.
Today, she stayed in the doorway.
Emilia shifted against her chest.
Lucia kissed the baby’s forehead.
Rosa saw that and became angry again.
“You are letting them turn you against me.”
Lucia almost smiled.
The sentence was so old it sounded tired.
“No.”
“You did that.”
Maribel looked between them.
“Lucia, please.”
Lucia turned to her sister.
“Did you know she listed the house?”
Maribel’s silence answered.
Lucia nodded slowly.
“Did you know she took the key?”
Maribel cried harder.
“I didn’t take it.”
“That was not my question.”
Tomás rubbed his face.
“We needed somewhere stable.”
Gabriel stepped toward him.
“You were going to take stability from a widow and a newborn?”
Tomás’s cheeks flushed.
“It’s not like that.”
Dana lifted the deed.
“It is exactly like that.”
Rosa pointed at the legal folder.
“Papers are not family.”
Lucia’s voice was quiet.
“No.”
“But family should not require police.”
Rosa flinched.
That one hit.
Officer Bennett explained the situation in formal terms.
Rosa, Maribel, and Tomás were not to enter the property again without Lucia’s written permission.
The suitcases had to leave the porch.
The unauthorized listing had to be removed immediately.
The key was retained as evidence.
Further entry could result in arrest.
Rosa stared at the officer.
“You would arrest a grandmother?”
Officer Bennett answered calmly.
“I would arrest a trespasser.”
Maribel sobbed.
Tomás picked up one suitcase.
Rosa did not move.
Her eyes locked on Lucia.
“You think he loved you more than your own mother?”
Lucia’s throat tightened.
Noah.
Rosa always knew where to place the knife.
Lucia looked down at the baby.
Then at the blue house.
Then at the lawyer.
Then at Gabriel.
Then back at Rosa.
“No.”
“I think he trusted me more.”
Rosa’s face went still.
There was no answer for that.
