PART 5

Maribel broke first.

She always did.

As children, she broke vases, rules, promises, and then cried until Lucia apologized for standing nearby.

Now she stood behind Rosa in a white dress, mascara running, one hand over her mouth.

“I didn’t think it would happen like this.”

Lucia looked at her.

“How did you think it would happen?”

Maribel glanced at the suitcase.

Then at Tomás.

Then at Rosa.

“She said you couldn’t handle the house.”

Rosa snapped, “Because she can’t.”

Maribel flinched but continued.

“She said you were drowning.”

Lucia looked down at Emilia.

“I am tired.”

“That is not the same as drowning.”

Tomás finally spoke.

His voice was low.

“We were only going to stay for a while.”

Gabriel laughed once.

It was not kind.

“With suitcases?”

Tomás looked ashamed.

Rosa glared at him.

“Don’t act weak now.”

Lucia’s eyes moved to the largest suitcase.

It was not a weekend bag.

It was stuffed full.

Clothes.

Shoes.

Documents.

A framed photo sticking out from the front pocket.

Maribel’s wedding photo.

They had come to settle.

Not support.

Not visit.

Settle.

Dana opened another folder.

“There is more.”

Rosa’s face tightened.

Lucia turned toward the lawyer.

“What?”

Dana looked at her gently.

“I think you should hear it now.”

She removed a printed copy of a rental listing.

Lucia’s stomach dropped.

The listing showed the blue house.

Her house.

Photos from the front porch.

The living room.

The nursery window.

Available for family occupancy by arrangement.

Contact Rosa Alvarez.

Lucia stared.

Maribel whispered, “Mom…”

Rosa’s mouth pressed into a hard line.

Lucia could barely speak.

“You listed my house?”

Rosa lifted her chin.

“I was exploring options.”

“You put my nursery online.”

“For family.”

“You put my baby’s home online.”

Rosa’s face hardened.

“You are too emotional to make decisions.”

Lucia felt something inside her finally detach.

Maybe it was the daughter who had spent twenty-eight years trying to be good enough.

Maybe it was the woman who had still wanted Rosa to become kind.

Whatever it was, it left quietly.

Lucia looked at Officer Bennett.

“I want to file the report.”

Rosa’s eyes widened.

“Lucia.”

Lucia did not look away from the officer.

“Stolen key.”

“Unauthorized entry.”

“Attempted trespass.”

“And listing my home without permission.”

Officer Bennett nodded.

“Yes, ma’am.”

May you like

Rosa took one step back as if the porch itself had betrayed her.
