PART 6

The police had been inside the house for twenty minutes before Rosa arrived.

That was Gabriel’s idea.

Lucia had resisted at first.

Not because Rosa was innocent.

Because calling police on your own mother feels impossible until motherhood teaches you who you are responsible for first.

That morning, Lucia found the back door unlocked.

She knew she had locked it.

Sleep deprivation could make many things uncertain.

Locks were not one of them.

Then she saw the kitchen drawer open.

The spare key missing.

A folded blanket moved from the closet.

A coffee mug in the sink.

Someone had been inside.

Not a burglar.

Someone comfortable enough to browse.

Lucia called Gabriel.

He arrived in twelve minutes.

Then Dana.

Then the police.

Officer Bennett found no forced entry.

Only the missing key.

Then Gabriel checked the doorbell camera.

Rosa had entered at 7:04 a.m.

Maribel at 7:09.

Tomás at 7:11.

They walked through the house while Lucia was at Emilia’s first pediatric appointment.

The footage showed Rosa pointing at rooms.

Maribel measuring the front window with her hands.

Tomás opening the garage.

Rosa taking a folder from the sideboard and photographing documents with her phone.

Lucia watched the footage once.

Then turned away because rage and postpartum exhaustion are a dangerous combination.

Dana placed a hand on her shoulder.

“We can be ready when she comes back.”

Lucia held Emilia and whispered, “She will come back?”

Gabriel looked out the window.

“With suitcases.”

He was right.

Now Rosa stood on the porch facing the same officers who had watched her on camera.

Officer Bennett held a tablet.

“Mrs. Alvarez, we have video of your entry.”

Rosa’s face tightened.

“My daughter gave me permission.”

Lucia’s voice was steady.

“No, I didn’t.”

Rosa looked at her with outrage.

“I raised you.”

“And Noah left me this house.”

“I gave you life.”

Lucia held Emilia closer.

“And I am protecting hers.”

That sentence changed everything.

Rosa had always won by dragging Lucia backward into childhood.

But Emilia kept Lucia anchored in the present.

A crying newborn.

A deed.

A stolen key.

A police report.

A mother who would not move aside.

Officer Bennett extended his hand.

“The key, ma’am.”

Rosa’s fingers closed around it.

For a moment, Lucia thought she would refuse.

Then Gabriel stepped closer.

Rosa looked at him.

Then at the officers.

Then at the baby sleeping in Lucia’s arms.

Finally, she dropped the key into the officer’s palm.

It sounded tiny.

May you like

It ended years.
