Chapter 1 - The Plate Beside the ArmchairClarissa Bennett knew something was wrong before she entered the dining room.

The country house was usually noisy at six o’clock. Dustin liked to race down the staircase when he heard her key in the front door, then inspect every grocery bag as if she might have brought home treasure.

That evening, no one greeted her.

She carried two paper bags through the foyer and followed the smell of fried chicken into the dining room.

Alana sat at the head of the polished oak table. Her daughter, Ellie, occupied the chair beside her. Eight-year-old Mason leaned over a platter piled with chicken, biscuits, corn, and buttered potatoes.

Dustin was not at the table.

Clarissa found her seven-year-old son sitting alone in a worn armchair near the staircase.

A plastic plate rested on his knees.

One cold boiled potato lay in the center.

Alana pointed at him with a greasy fork.

“Children who aren’t really family need to learn their place.”

Clarissa dropped the grocery bags.

Oranges rolled across the hardwood floor.

Dustin immediately tried to hide his plate behind the armchair.

Clarissa crossed the room and took his hand.

It was cold.

“Why aren’t you eating with everyone else?”

Dustin looked down.

“Grandma said I’m a burden.”

Alana sighed.

“Oh, stop making it sound cruel. He refused to apologize to Mason.”

“For what?”

Mason spoke with his mouth full.

“He touched my game.”

Dustin shook his head.

“It was mine first.”

Ellie laughed.

“Everything in this house belongs to family.”

Clarissa slowly picked up the plastic plate.

The potato was hard and gray around the edges. It had been removed from the refrigerator without being warmed.

She threw it into the trash.

Then she positioned herself between Dustin and the table.

“You have two hours to leave my house.”

Alana pushed back her chair.

“What did you say?”

“You heard me.”

Ellie violently shoved her chair aside.

“Parker will put you back in your place.”

Clarissa removed a document from the locked drawer beneath the sideboard. She unfolded the deed and placed it beside the fried chicken.

Her name appeared as sole owner.

The house had belonged to her grandfather. Clarissa purchased the remaining family shares after her parents died. Parker had never owned a brick of it.

Alana stared at the deed.

“You told us the property became marital.”

“No. Parker told you that.”

Clarissa picked up Ellie’s smartphone, which had been abandoned beside a wineglass. The screen was unlocked.

An active audio recording remained open.

She pressed play.

Parker’s voice filled the room.

“Once she signs, the house is ours—and the boy disappears.”

No one moved.

The recording continued.

Ellie asked, “What if Clarissa refuses?”

Parker answered, “Mom will provoke her. We document the outburst, call her unstable, and use the guardianship petition.”

Alana’s face turned white.

Dustin gripped Clarissa’s hand.

Then headlights swept across the front windows.

A vehicle stopped outside.

Heavy footsteps approached the entrance.

Ellie whispered, “That’s Parker.”

Clarissa looked toward the door while the recording continued playing.

Parker’s voice delivered one final instruction:

“Do not let Dustin eat before the doctor arrives. He needs to look neglected.”

👉 Clarissa had discovered a plan to steal her house—but the cold potato was also part of an attempt to frame her for abusing her own son.
