Chapter 11 - The Two FathersParker denied being Dustin’s father.

He admitted having a brief relationship with Anna eight years earlier.

When she became pregnant, she told him the child belonged to Caleb.

Parker believed her.

Later, Anna hired him to investigate Gray Heritage because she trusted his financial skills.

“Why hide that from me?” Clarissa asked.

“Because you would think I married you to stay near Dustin.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“You knew Anna wanted him adopted by a Bennett descendant.”

“Yes.”

“You arranged to meet me.”

“Rebecca introduced us.”

Rebecca looked away.

Another engineered beginning.

Clarissa no longer knew whether any important relationship in her life began without someone else designing the room.

The registry’s paternity notation came from Dr. Ward, not an independent laboratory. Parker’s name could have been inserted for leverage.

Caleb’s recent DNA match might also be fraudulent.

Dustin’s biological father remained uncertain.

Clarissa called the hospital.

“No more genetic testing unless a court appoints an independent lab and Dustin’s advocate approves it.”

Caleb agreed.

Parker looked hurt that Clarissa did not trust him.

She almost laughed.

Trust was not a reward for presenting one plausible explanation.

Outside, Howard’s men seized Judge Cole.

The police supervisor warned that state officers were approaching.

Howard raised the marriage certificate and shouted toward the house.

“Give me the registry or Rose’s legal identity disappears tonight.”

He claimed to possess the only surviving original birth record proving Rose Holloway and Alana’s relationship.

Without it, Alana’s claim against Gray Heritage weakened.

Alana moved toward the door.

Rose stopped her.

“I will not trade Dustin’s registry for my name.”

“You already abandoned your name once.”

“To keep you alive.”

“And look what your silence made me.”

Rose accepted the pain in the accusation.

“It did not make you starve a child. You chose that.”

Alana began crying.

For the first time, no anger protected her.

Mason stood beside Ellie, watching his grandmother collapse.

Clarissa told Ellie to take him upstairs.

Ellie refused.

“I’m not hiding while everyone decides what happens to us.”

She opened the phone recording archive.

A second conversation existed beneath the one Clarissa first played.

Parker spoke privately with Howard.

“After Clarissa signs, Alana and Ellie leave.”

Howard asked, “And Dustin?”

Parker answered, “He stays with me.”

Clarissa looked at him.

The recording contradicted his earlier claim that Dustin would go to Caleb.

Parker closed his eyes.

“I was telling Howard what he wanted to hear.”

“Which version is true?”

“I planned to take Dustin and leave after securing the registry.”

“Without me?”

“You were supposed to be temporarily hospitalized.”

The room went silent.

Parker had planned to remove both Clarissa and Dustin from the legal board.

He told himself it would last only until he defeated Howard.

He still intended to have his wife falsely confined.

He still intended to take her son.

“Love does not survive that kind of plan,” Clarissa said.

Parker looked toward Dustin’s photograph in the registry.

“I thought the system was too powerful to fight openly.”

“So you became part of it.”

“Yes.”

State police lights finally appeared in the distance.

Howard’s men began retreating.

Then the black ledger vibrated.

A tracker had been hidden inside its spine.

Judge Cole had not surrendered the registry out of fear.

He had used it to lead someone into the house.

The staircase panel opened behind Rose.

Dr. Ward emerged from the hidden corridor holding Dustin by the shoulder.

She had escaped the hospital.

The child’s face was pale, and one shoe was missing again.

Clarissa froze.

“How did you get him here?”

Ward smiled.

“The advocate drove exactly where the court order instructed.”

Dustin looked at Clarissa.

“Mom, she says only my real father can choose where I live.”

Behind Dr. Ward stood a man Clarissa had never seen.

He resembled both Parker and Caleb.

He looked at Dustin with tears in his eyes.

“My name is Daniel Wells,” he said. “Anna was my sister.”

Then he faced Clarissa.

“And neither of those men is his father.”

👉 A third claimant arrived through the hidden passage with Dustin, declaring that every paternity story had been manufactured.
