Chapter 8 - The Buyer in the Black SUVPolice ordered Parker to keep his hands visible.

He entered the foyer slowly and placed the flash drive on the floor.
The black SUV remained beyond the front gate.
No one exited.
Parker looked at Clarissa.
“I need protection.”
“You drugged Dustin.”
“I did not give him the drink.”
“You prepared the guardianship petition.”
“Yes.”
“You forged my deed.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to send my son away.”
Parker’s eyes lowered.
“I planned to place him with Caleb for several weeks.”
“The recording says residential program.”
“That was what Howard demanded.”
“And you agreed.”
“I thought I could change the placement after the sale.”
“You always think betrayal becomes harmless if you fix it later.”
Parker had no response.
The flash drive contained Gray Heritage payment records, emails, and a video recorded inside Parker’s office.
Howard Gray Jr. admitted his father helped declare Rose incompetent and arrange William Bennett’s acquisition of the property.
He also admitted Anna Wells discovered the old files.
“She wanted to bring Rose back publicly,” Howard said in the recording. “That could not happen before the development rights were secured.”
Parker asked, “Did you kill her?”
Howard answered:
“I removed an obstacle.”
The phrase was not a direct confession, but it was close.
Another file showed Dr. Helen Ward receiving payment from Gray Heritage two weeks before Anna died.
Dr. Ward had signed her final medical report.
The same doctor later drugged Dustin.
Clarissa understood why Parker brought the evidence.
Howard intended to destroy everyone who could connect the cases.
Rose.
Caleb.
Dustin.
Clarissa.
Even Parker.
The black SUV’s driver finally stepped out.
Not Howard.
Deputy Alan Brooks.
The man who had brought the emergency removal order.
He was off duty now, wearing a dark coat.
He opened the rear door.
Howard Gray Jr. emerged carrying an umbrella.
Two private security men followed.
The police supervisor inside the house radioed for backup.
Static answered.
Parker said Howard’s company controlled a communications tower on the neighboring ridge.
The signal had been jammed.
Clarissa locked the interior doors.
Rose refused to return to the hidden room.
“I hid for forty years.”
“You are not facing them alone.”
“No. But I am facing them where they can see me.”
Howard approached the porch.
He looked through the glass and saw Rose.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
“You should be dead.”
Rose answered through the intercom.
“Your father said the same thing.”
Howard held up a court document.
He claimed the property was now under emergency receivership because of competing title claims and financial fraud. Gray Heritage had been appointed temporary manager to preserve the asset.
The order carried Judge Cole’s signature.
Clarissa laughed bitterly.
Every side arrived with papers.
Howard ordered everyone to vacate.
The police supervisor refused.
Brooks displayed another badge.
He was not only a county deputy. He served as security director for Gray Heritage.
His law-enforcement role had helped manufacture the child-removal order.
Parker whispered:
“He controls the real backup units.”
The house lights went out.
Emergency lamps activated along the staircase.
Someone opened the rear service entrance.
Ellie entered from the darkness carrying Mason.
She had been released from hospital questioning because no warrant had yet been signed.
Alana followed.
Ellie locked the door behind them.
Clarissa stared.
“You brought them here?”
Alana looked toward Howard outside.
“No. We came before he did.”
She placed a folder on the dining table.
It contained Rose’s original marriage certificate.
Rose Holloway had married Howard Gray Sr. secretly in 1980.
Alana was not only Rose’s daughter.
She was Howard Gray Jr.’s half-sister.
The property conflict had always been a family war.
Howard saw the certificate through the window.
His expression turned murderous.
Alana whispered:
“If that marriage is proven, I inherit half of Gray Heritage.”
Parker finally understood.
Alana had never wanted only the house.
She wanted the company that helped erase her mother.
Then Mason began crying.
He opened his coat.
A small tracking device had been taped beneath his shirt.

Howard’s men had followed them directly to the property.
👉 Alana returned with proof that could destroy Howard’s inheritance—but she unknowingly brought his tracking device into the house.
