Chapter 12 - Anna’s BrotherDaniel Wells carried no weapon.

Dr. Ward did.

She held a syringe against Dustin’s sleeve while keeping one hand on his shoulder.

Clarissa moved slowly.

“Let him go.”

Ward’s smile tightened.

“Not until the registry is returned.”

Daniel looked toward her.

“You said we were bringing him to Clarissa.”

“We are.”

“You never mentioned a syringe.”

“You knew the boy needed to stay calm.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

He had been deceived too.

He stepped away from Ward.

“Dustin, come to me.”

She pressed the syringe closer.

“Do not move.”

Parker positioned himself beside Clarissa. Caleb spoke through the phone from the hospital, hearing everything through the open call.

Outside, state police reached the gate but Howard’s SUV blocked the entrance.

The interior police supervisor ordered Ward to lower the syringe.

She refused.

Clarissa asked Daniel why he believed neither Parker nor Caleb was Dustin’s father.

Anna left him a sealed letter before her death.

She said the paternity question had been deliberately confused to prevent one powerful family from claiming Dustin.

The actual father was a man involved in Gray Heritage’s guardianship network.

Anna feared the child would be used to control assets if his identity became known.

“Who?” Clarissa asked.

Daniel removed the letter.

The final name had been cut away.

Dr. Ward possessed the missing piece.

She wanted the registry in exchange.

The black ledger contained proof that Ward falsified paternity tests for dozens of children. If police secured it, she faced years of exposure.

Clarissa placed the ledger on the floor.

“Release Dustin first.”

“No.”

“Then you leave with nothing.”

Ward looked toward Rose.

“You hid for forty years. Tell her survival requires compromise.”

Rose answered:

“Survival required compromise. Living with what I became required truth.”

Dustin moved suddenly.

He stomped on Ward’s foot.

The syringe shifted away.

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

Parker pulled Dustin free.

The police supervisor forced Ward against the staircase wall.

No final arrest was shown, but the syringe fell and officers separated her from the child.

Clarissa held Dustin so tightly he could barely breathe.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“You did nothing wrong.”

“I left the hospital.”

“You were taken.”

“The lady had papers.”

“Papers do not make lies true.”

Daniel surrendered Anna’s letter.

The missing section remained with Ward, but Rebecca examined the torn edge and discovered pressure marks from the removed paper.

Using angled light, she reconstructed several letters.

The father’s surname ended in Gray.

Howard Gray Jr. stood outside.

Clarissa felt the revelation forming.

Anna may have been involved with Howard.

Or his hidden brother.

Daniel searched his sister’s old photographs.

One showed Anna at a Gray Heritage company picnic beside Howard.

Another showed her with Michael Gray, an accountant unrelated to the family.

Then Rose recognized a man in the background.

“That is Howard Senior.”

The photo was taken seven years earlier.

Howard Sr. was supposed to have died twenty years ago.

He had survived under another identity.

Anna’s letter may have named him.

That would make Dustin the son of a man old enough to be his grandfather.

Clarissa rejected the assumption without evidence.

The network had forged too many names.

Ward began laughing from police restraint.

“You think Anna protected Dustin from his father?”

“Who is he?” Clarissa asked.

“She protected the father from Dustin.”

The child was tied to an inheritance larger than the country house.

Anna had discovered that one Gray heir possessed controlling shares in several medical and property companies.

If the child inherited, he could expose the entire guardianship network.

Ward claimed Dustin was not merely evidence.

He was its legal owner.

Then the black ledger opened to a hidden final section.

A trust certificate named Dustin Wells Bennett as beneficiary of Gray Heritage’s controlling shares upon the death of Howard Gray Sr.

The certificate was dated before Dustin’s birth.

Someone had planned his inheritance before Anna became pregnant.

The beneficiary designation required a specific bloodline.

Clarissa looked toward Rose.

Rose looked toward Alana.

Alana looked at Mason.

Mason had the same unusual gray-green eyes as Dustin.

Ellie suddenly pulled him closer.

“No.”

Clarissa opened Mason’s birth certificate.

The father listed was Ellie’s former husband.

But the sealed registry identified a different biological father.

Caleb Holloway.

Dustin and Mason were half-brothers.

Caleb’s DNA match to Dustin may have reflected close family relationship without direct paternity.

The actual father could be Caleb’s own father—Thomas Holloway.

A man Rose said died before Alana was born.

Another impossible timeline.

Then the house speaker activated.

An elderly man’s voice said:

“Rose, stop telling them I died.”

The hidden corridor lights turned on.

A tall man in his eighties stepped into view.

Rose’s first husband, Thomas Holloway, was alive.

He looked directly at Dustin.

“My family has waited seven years for that boy.”

👉 Dustin’s inheritance was planned before his birth, and the man at the center of the Holloway bloodline had returned to claim him.
