Chapter 10 - The Records FloorThe hospital locked down the medical-records floor.
Walt held Lucy inside the server room with one arm around her shoulders.
A security camera showed the gun pressed against her side.
Hannah remained at Lizzy’s bedside while Natalie, Adam, Sarah, Grace, Beth, and Detective Chen returned from Harbor Point under federal escort.
Sarah entered the hospital through a private entrance.
She had not seen Lizzy in two years.
The reunion could not happen yet.
Walt controlled the floor directly above them and had threatened to trigger the server’s fire-suppression system if anyone approached.
The system would not harm people immediately, but it could destroy paper archives and damage older drives.
Walt wanted the sealed records erased.
He also demanded Lizzy’s bracelet.
“The barcode opens the protected index,” Hannah explained.
The bracelet was a physical authentication token created by Vale’s unit. Lizzy’s reused identifier connected several child profiles.
Walt believed destroying it would sever the database link.
Federal technicians disagreed, but no one knew what backup system Vale built.
Walt called Natalie.
“Bring the bracelet.”
“Release Lucy.”
“She came here voluntarily.”
Lucy shouted in the background.
“He’s lying!”
Walt tightened his hold.
“You already took Sarah and Grace. You do not need the Lane girl.”
Beth seized the phone.
“She has a name.”
Walt recognized her voice.
“Beth.”
“You said Lucy drowned.”
“You were difficult to control after she disappeared.”
“You made me believe I killed her.”
“You allowed her to enter the tunnel.”
Beth’s face crumpled.
Natalie took the phone back.
“You do not get to place your choices inside a child.”
Walt demanded the bracelet again.
Lizzy overheard from her room.
She touched the plastic band.
“Does Grandpa want this?”
Natalie knelt.
“Yes.”
“Because it remembers?”
“What does it remember?”
Lizzy looked toward Gloria’s guarded consultation room.
“Everybody.”
The bracelet had been used during switching appointments. It contained a small internal memory chip that stored recent scan locations.
Hannah removed it only after photographing the placement and replacing it with a standard band.
The hidden chip showed every hospital and clinic where the identity had been used.
One location remained unknown.
A private pediatric laboratory beneath the Harper Foundation headquarters.
Walt’s final backup might be there.
Natalie carried a duplicate bracelet toward the records floor while federal officers prepared another entrance route.
Sarah stopped her.
“He knows your face.”
“He asked for me.”
“He asked because he wants a hostage with legal authority over the trust.”
Natalie knew.
She went anyway, wearing a concealed microphone and remaining behind reinforced glass.
Walt brought Lucy to the opposite side.
The teenager looked directly at Beth through a live camera.
Neither sister could cross the locked doors.
Natalie held up the duplicate bracelet.
“Open the server room.”
Walt laughed.
“That isn’t the original.”
“How do you know?”
“Lizzy’s bracelet has a red scratch beside the clasp.”
He had monitored it closely.
Lucy suddenly drove her elbow into his chest.
The gun shifted.
Federal officers breached the side entrance.
Walt fired once into the ceiling and fled through a service hatch.
Lucy remained unharmed.
No final arrest occurred; Walt escaped into the hospital’s maintenance system.
Beth reached Lucy seconds later.
The sisters stood inches apart.
Beth touched the birthmark near Lucy’s ear.
“You’re real.”
Lucy began crying.
“So are you.”
Their reunion remained fragile and incomplete.
Sarah entered Lizzy’s room.
The child stared at her mother for a long time.
Then she whispered:
“Mommy?”
Sarah held out her hand.
Lizzy moved into her arms.
Grace stood beside the bed.
For one brief moment, the three were together.
Then Hannah’s scanner beeped.
The duplicate bracelet Walt rejected had activated a new record.
Patient release pending—Elizabeth Harper transferred to Harper Foundation Laboratory.
Another child was currently registered as Lizzy.
The transfer occurred three minutes earlier.
Security footage showed Gloria leaving her consultation room with Malcolm Reed.
Between them walked a little girl wearing Lizzy’s coat.
She had Grace’s face.
