Chapter 7 - Beth LanePolice found Beth’s abandoned transport van near the old church.
The driver’s door stood open.
Blood marked the steering wheel, but the amount was limited.
A child’s blue sweater lay in the back.
DNA testing later confirmed it belonged to Grace.
Beth was not found.
Inside the church basement, officers discovered a furnished room with two beds, a medical cabinet, and walls covered in children’s drawings.
One showed Lizzy and Grace holding Sarah’s hands.
Another showed Gloria standing outside a locked door.
A third depicted a young woman with a heart-shaped mark near her ear driving a van through rain.
Beth.
Detective Chen found a hidden camera beneath the ceiling vent.
The latest footage showed Sarah being moved from White Pine into the church basement.
She was alive but weak.
Grace sat beside her.
Beth brought them food.
Walt entered later and ordered Beth to prepare the transport van.
When Beth refused, he struck her.
The struggle moved outside the camera’s view.
Minutes later, Sarah and Grace disappeared from the room.
Beth had either helped them escape or lost them to Walt.
Natalie watched the footage from the hospital.
“She isn’t helping Gloria willingly.”
Hannah agreed.
“Beth grew up inside their control. Survival can look like cooperation from the outside.”
The church records explained her history.
Gloria and Walt fostered Beth when she was five. Her biological parents died, leaving her a small life-insurance trust.
The Harpers drained it through false medical expenses.
When Beth began telling teachers she was locked in closets, Dr. Vale diagnosed her with attachment disorder and compulsive lying.
Her identity was changed.
Her guardianship transferred to White Pine.
She eventually became a transport aide because the Harpers told her no one else would hire a “violent former patient.”
They converted a victim into an employee.
Sarah’s damaged phone contained another recording addressed to Beth.
“You are not what they wrote about you. If you can get Grace out, Natalie will believe you.”
Sarah had trusted the young woman.
A traffic camera located the transport van before it was abandoned.
Beth drove.
Walt sat beside her holding a handgun low against the seat.
Sarah and Grace were in the back.
At the next intersection, Beth deliberately struck a barrier.
The camera showed Walt leaving the van alone.
Sarah and Grace escaped through a service alley.
Beth remained behind.
The blood on the steering wheel belonged to her.
Police searched nearby buildings.
They found a trail of wet footprints leading toward a closed train station.
Then the trail ended.
Adam searched Walt’s financial accounts for emergency purchases.
A prepaid train card was used three minutes after the crash.
The destination was a coastal town called Harbor Point.
The Harper Foundation owned a rehabilitation residence there.
Sarah had once volunteered at the same property before marrying Daniel.
Natalie prepared to travel with Detective Chen.
Malcolm filed another objection.
Judge Cole denied police access to the Harbor Point property, claiming the evidence came from illegally obtained medical records.
Chen contacted federal investigators through Beth’s missing-child case.
The federal warrant process began.
Time mattered.
Gloria sat under hospital questioning and continued denying everything.
Walt had disappeared after leaving the van.
Dr. Vale remained missing.
Patricia Sloan could not be located.
Someone called Natalie from a blocked number.
Beth’s voice whispered:
“Don’t go through the front gate.”
“Where are you?”
“Harbor Point.”
“Is Sarah with you?”
A breath.
“Yes.”
“Grace?”
“Yes.”
“Are they safe?”
“Not for long.”
Beth began crying.
“Walt knows the basement tunnel.”
The line went dead.
Natalie looked toward Adam.
He opened the Harbor Point property plans.
The residence stood above sea cliffs. A maintenance tunnel connected the basement to an old storm-drain outlet below the rocks.
At high tide, the lower passage flooded.
The tide would rise within an hour.
Then Lizzy woke in the hospital and asked for her mother.
Natalie sat beside her.
“We found where she may be.”
Lizzy reached under her blanket and handed Natalie a piece of paper.
She had drawn three girls.
Lizzy.
Grace.
Beth.
Behind them stood a fourth child.
“Who is that?” Natalie asked.
Lizzy whispered:
May you like
“The one Grandma says Beth left in the water.”
