Chapter 13 - The First ClinicBoston County Children’s Hospital had been expanded three times.

The oldest wing sat beneath the current emergency department.

Public plans described it as sealed storage.

Walt called it the first clinic.

Dr. Vale began the identity program there twenty-five years earlier. Children from foster homes, private trusts, and contested estates were evaluated under temporary names.

Some were genuinely protected from dangerous families.

Others were hidden because their existence complicated money.

The old clinic connected to the hospital through maintenance elevators and ventilation shafts.

Gloria could enter without crossing public security.

Hannah locked Lizzy and Grace’s floor while federal agents searched below.

Sarah remained with the twins.

Natalie joined the command team near the emergency department, refusing to stay away while Clara remained missing.

Adam carried Walt’s ledger.

Patricia held a childhood photograph of the daughter she had never raised.

The basement door opened with Dr. Vale’s retired access code.

Inside, fluorescent lights illuminated a preserved pediatric ward.

Small beds.

Observation windows.

Old toys.

Cabinets filled with bracelets.

Each bracelet represented a child assigned a different history.

The first room contained video recordings from White Pine.

The second contained birth certificates.

The third contained legal seals belonging to Judge Cole.

In the final ward, Gloria stood beside Clara.

Dr. Vale waited near a medical scanner.

Malcolm Reed held a sealed deed.

The document would transfer Clara’s contingent trust into Vale’s control after a biometric identity confirmation.

They intended to scan her as Lizzy one final time.

Patricia moved forward.

“Clara.”

The child looked toward her.

Gloria tightened her grip.

“She doesn’t know you.”

“She knows fear when you touch her.”

Dr. Vale ordered Patricia removed.

Federal officers entered behind Natalie.

Malcolm raised the deed.

“If you interrupt the scan, the child loses her legal identity.”

Natalie looked at Clara.

“She loses a false identity.”

“She loses access to every school, doctor, and account.”

“Then we build the true one.”

“You think truth repairs records overnight?”

“No. But lies will not own her another night.”

Gloria laughed.

“You sound like Sarah.”

“I learned from what you did to her.”

Vale attempted to activate the scanner remotely.

Adam disconnected the power.

Malcolm moved toward the emergency switch.

Walt appeared in the doorway.

He pointed at Gloria.

“You promised me the trust.”

She looked at him with contempt.

“You lost control of Lizzy.”

Their marriage had become another business alliance collapsing under exposure.

Walt revealed Vale planned to eliminate both Harpers once Clara’s identity was confirmed.

Vale denied it.

Walt played an audio recording.

Vale’s voice said:

“Gloria and Walt become unstable guardians. Malcolm files the removal. Clara remains with me.”

Every conspirator had prepared to betray the others.

Clara used the distraction.

She pulled away from Gloria and ran toward Patricia.

Patricia dropped to her knees.

The child stopped several feet from her.

“Are you really my mom?”

Patricia did not reach for her.

“I gave birth to you. I did not raise you. You decide when I may come closer.”

Clara began crying.

Then she crossed the distance herself.

Gloria lunged.

Natalie blocked her.

Federal officers separated them.

No final arrest was shown. Gloria screamed that the hospital belonged to the foundation while Malcolm demanded emergency legal review.

Dr. Vale fled through the back corridor.

Walt followed, carrying the black ledger.

Federal agents pursued them.

A fire alarm activated.

Smoke began entering the old ward through the vents.

Vale had triggered the clinic’s destruction system.

Natalie, Patricia, and officers moved Clara toward the stairwell.

Upstairs, Hannah called.

Lizzy’s patient bracelet had begun transmitting from somewhere below them.

The original bracelet was inside police evidence.

Yet the scanner showed it moving toward the hospital incinerator.

Someone had removed the evidence chip.

The moving signal was attached to the master registry that linked every child identity.

If it burned, many true records could disappear.

Sarah looked at the twins.

“Vale is not running away.”

“Where is he going?” Natalie asked.

May you like

“To erase the children.”

👉 Clara escaped Gloria’s control, but Dr. Vale was carrying the master identity registry toward the hospital incinerator.
