A steel ladder descended behind the wall.
Water surged through the corridor below.
Federal rescue officers entered with breathing equipment and cutting tools.
Beth refused to remain upstairs.
“She is my sister.”
Detective Chen held her back.
“You are injured.”
“I spent eleven years believing she died because I wasn’t brave enough.”
“You were a child.”
Beth looked toward Grace.
“So was she.”
Natalie understood the impossible burden Beth carried. Gloria and Walt had taught every child that survival depended on preventing the suffering of someone else.
If another child was hurt, the survivor was to blame.
The rescue team reached the submerged door.
Behind it, they found an underground records chamber protected by waterproof walls.
No child lived there.
But the room contained recent food packaging, bedding, and photographs of a young woman.
Lucy had survived childhood.
She was now sixteen.
A camera showed she had occupied the chamber until the previous night.
Someone moved her before the Harbor Point escape.
The archive contained medical reports under the name Lucille Vale.
Dr. Martin Vale was listed as her father.
Beth stared at the papers.
“Vale took her.”
He had not allowed Lucy to drown.
He stole her identity and raised her as his own hidden dependent.
Why?
The Lane sisters’ parents owned patents connected to pediatric monitoring devices. Their trust passed to both daughters.
Beth’s disappearance allowed the Harpers to drain half.
Lucy’s hidden survival gave Vale control over the other half.

Patricia sat beneath guard and explained that she joined Vale’s network after he threatened her son. She began saving records secretly years later.
“Where is Lucy now?” Beth asked.
Patricia looked toward Dr. Vale.
He refused to answer.
Then Adam found a payment made that morning.
Vale transferred money to a Boston apartment registered under the name Lucy Martin.
Natalie called Hannah.
“Search your hospital staff.”
Hannah typed the name.
A teenage volunteer named Lucy Martin worked in the pediatric playroom.
She had begun volunteering six weeks earlier.
The hospital camera showed her entering Lizzy’s hallway shortly before the forged transport team arrived.
Lucy had been inside the hospital the entire time.
Was she helping Vale?
Or trying to reach Beth?
Hannah searched the volunteer room.
Lucy’s jacket remained there.
A note rested inside the pocket.
Beth, I knew you would come when Grace escaped. Do not trust Patricia. She gave Vale the first girl.
Beth confronted Patricia.
The retired nurse closed her eyes.

Patricia did not know he planned to use the trust.

“You handed her to him.”

“No.”
