Chapter 25 - ROBERT LOSES THE HEAD TABLE

The family changed before my parents did.
Christmas came.
For the first time, Robert and Helen did not host.
Margaret refused.
“I’m too old.”
Nicole hosted at her modest ranch house.
Potluck.
Everyone brought something.
I brought ham.
Not money.
Actual ham.
Dad arrived carrying wine.
No head table.
No assigned seating.
The children came because they chose to after therapy and boundaries.
They stayed near me.
Robert approached Samuel.
“Need help with that plate?”
Samuel looked at me.
Then back at Robert.
“No, thanks.”
Simple.
Dad moved on.
Helen asked Rebecca if she wanted to help set dessert.
Rebecca said:
“Is everybody helping?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Okay.”
That was humility.

Shared work.
Not service imposed downward.
