Chapter 6 - REBECCA’S PHONE
Police agreed my sister? No sister. My cousin David? Better my attorney can recover Rebecca's phone via arranged pickup. We can do police standby because tension. I called an attorney first.
Her name was Helen Park.
Different from Mom; confusing. Change to Laura Park.
Laura Park had handled my company’s contracts for six years.
I called her Sunday morning.
“My father wants me to guarantee a property loan using a company I didn’t know existed.”
“Good morning to you too.”
I explained.
Then the plate.
She became quiet.
“You threw ceramic at his head?”
“I threw it toward him.”
“That sentence is not helping you.”
“It grazed him.”
“Police?”
“Report.”
“Then you do not contact him directly about anything substantive.”
“I need Rebecca’s phone.”
“We arrange.”
A patrol officer met us at my parents’ house because tensions were documented.
I stayed by the car.
The children stayed home with a sitter.
Helen brought the phone outside.
She looked smaller without the party.
“Your father is devastated.”
“Where’s the phone?”
She handed it over.
“You are punishing everyone.”
“No.”
“What do you call stopping the account?”
“Reviewing my money.”
She lowered her voice.
“Your father has obligations.”
“His obligations.”
“Family obligations.”
I looked at her.
“How long were the kids wearing aprons?”
She did not answer.
“Mom.”
“They volunteered at first.”
Rebecca said otherwise.
“Did you take her phone before or after she volunteered?”
Helen’s mouth tightened.
Then:
“They need humility.”
I walked away.
In the car, Rebecca’s phone showed eleven missed calls to me.
None had reached my phone.
Why?
She had called while I was in a basement site inspection with no signal.
Then texts.
DAD PLEASE COME.
GRANDMA WONT LET US STOP.
JACOB IS CRYING.
Another:
THEY SAY YOU KNOW.
I stared.
My mother had told them I approved.
That changed the betrayal.
