PART 1
“They planned to sell her country house for her pregnant sister… but she had already sold it before they arrived.”
Emily Parker stood in the gravel driveway of the white farmhouse while her mother grabbed the front of her red plaid shirt with both hands.
Autumn leaves scattered across the yard.
Moving boxes sat by the porch.
The old screen door swung softly in the wind.
Her father rushed forward with his palms raised, but not fast enough to stop her mother’s voice from breaking open the morning.
“You had no right to sell this house!”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
But she did not step back.
She took her mother’s wrists and removed her hands one finger at a time.
“You had no right to plan it without me.”
Her father stopped near the boxes, breathing hard.
“Emily, listen to me.”
“Claire needed that apartment money.”
Behind him, Claire stood in a burgundy sweater with one hand on her pregnant belly.
Her face went pale as she looked at the boxes.
Then at the farmhouse.
Then at Emily.
“Wait…”
“The house is really gone?”
Emily picked up her canvas bag from the porch step.
The same porch where her grandmother had once taught her how to shell peas.
The same porch where Emily had slept after her divorce because no one else in the family had room for her grief.
The same house her parents had called “old,” “impractical,” and “wasted” until Claire needed money.
Emily looked at all of them.
“It was mine.”
Her voice was soft.
“So I protected it.”
Her mother looked past her toward the SOLD sign near the fence.
Not pending.
Not listed.
Sold.
The family had arrived with a realtor, a moving truck, and a plan.
