PART 9

Emily left before sunset.

Not because her family calmed down.

Because she was finished giving them daylight.

Mark and Jenna stood by the porch as Emily loaded the last box into her small pickup.

Her mother refused to speak to her.

That was meant to punish.

It felt like weather clearing.

Her father approached once more.

His face looked older.

“Emily, if you leave like this, things may not be the same.”

She closed the truck bed.

“They already aren’t.”

“You’re choosing a house over family.”

Emily turned.

“No.”

“I chose myself before family could sell me as a solution.”

He looked wounded.

She no longer accepted every wound as proof of innocence.

Claire stood near Daniel by the road.

She had stopped crying.

That mattered.

She looked at Emily and said quietly, “I didn’t know Mom hired the moving van.”

Emily believed her.

Not completely.

Enough.

Claire swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

Their mother snapped, “Claire.”

Claire did not look away from Emily.

“I am.”

Emily nodded.

“Thank you.”

It was not forgiveness.

But it was a door left unlocked for later, if later became honest.

Her mother stormed toward the truck.

“You think you can just walk away?”

Emily looked at the white farmhouse.

The porch.

The windows.

The kitchen where Ruth had taught her to make peach jam.

The old oak that would now shade another family.

“No.”

“I’m not walking away.”

“I’m leaving it where it can be loved.”

Her mother sneered.

“You’ll regret this when you need us.”

Emily opened the driver’s door.

“I needed you before.”

“You called it being dramatic.”

That silenced even her father.

Emily got into the truck.

Before she drove off, Jenna came to the window and handed her a small envelope.

“We found this in the kitchen drawer after closing.”

Emily opened it.

Ruth’s handwriting.

For when you finally leave without guilt.

Emily’s breath caught.

She looked at the farmhouse one last time.
