PART 7
The new owners arrived while the argument was still burning.
Mark and Jenna Ellis drove up in a green truck with their two sons in the back seat and a folded welcome basket on the passenger floor.
They slowed when they saw the family blocking the driveway.
Emily walked toward them immediately.
“I’m sorry.”
Jenna stepped out carefully.
“Are you okay?”
Emily nodded.
Before she could answer, her mother turned on Jenna.
“Are you the people who stole our house?”
Mark’s expression hardened.
Jenna looked at Emily.
“Our house?”
Emily answered before anyone else could.
“The house I sold you.”
Her mother pointed at Jenna.
“You took advantage of a family situation.”
Jenna’s face changed from sympathy to steel.
“We bought property from its legal owner.”
Her father muttered, “This is still family land.”
Mark stepped forward.
“No, sir.”
“It is our home now.”
The word home struck the driveway differently coming from him.
Not asset.
Not apartment money.
Home.
Jenna looked at Emily.
“We can call the sheriff if you need us to.”
Emily’s mother gasped.
“The sheriff?”
Emily looked at her mother.
“You grabbed my shirt.”
Her father said, “That was emotional.”
Emily stared at him.
“Everything is emotional when you want consequences excused.”
Claire started crying harder.
Jenna looked at the pregnant woman and softened despite herself.
Then Claire said, “You don’t understand.”
“That house was supposed to help my baby.”
Jenna’s softness disappeared.
“My baby will sleep in that house too.”
Everyone went quiet.
Emily had known Jenna was pregnant.
Early.
Barely showing.
She had not mentioned it because Jenna did not owe this family another reason to respect her.
Claire stared at Jenna’s stomach.
Then at the house.
The comparison landed cruelly but honestly.
One pregnant woman had come expecting to benefit from a theft.
Another pregnant woman had bought a home legally and planned to preserve it.
Emily’s mother whispered, “This is betrayal.”
Emily answered, “No.”
“Betrayal was planning to sell the roof over my memories while pretending it was kindness.”
Mark stepped to the porch and picked up one of Emily’s boxes.
“Where do you want this?”
Emily swallowed hard.
“The truck.”
He nodded.
That small act of help nearly broke her.
