The realtor left first.
That told Emily everything.
He mumbled something about misunderstanding ownership and backed toward his car.
Her mother shouted after him.
“Don’t you dare leave.”
He did.
Daniel looked like he wanted to follow.
Claire grabbed his sleeve.
Her father stared at the SOLD sign as if it might change if he looked long enough.
“Emily,” he said.
“Undo it.”
Emily almost laughed.
“Undo a legal sale?”
“You can cancel.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand what this means for Claire.”
Emily turned toward him fully.
“I understand exactly what it means.”
“It means she cannot use my inheritance as her down payment.”
Claire began crying.
There it was.
The sound that had controlled the house since childhood.
Her mother immediately moved toward her.
“Look what you’ve done.”
Emily looked at Claire’s tears.
She felt something twist inside her.

Claire at ten, crying because Emily won the school art prize.

Every time, the family turned toward Emily like she had caused the weather.
This time, Emily did not apologize.
Claire whispered, “I’m pregnant.”
“I know.”
“My baby needs a home.”
“Then you and Daniel should buy one you can afford.”
Daniel flinched.
Claire turned on him.
“Say something.”
He swallowed.
“Emily, we thought maybe the sale would help everyone.”
Emily looked at him.
“No.”
“You thought it would help you.”
Her father stepped between them.
“This is not how family acts.”
Emily’s voice sharpened.
“You brought a moving van.”
Her mother snapped, “Because you never act unless we push you.”
Emily’s eyes burned.
“You mean unless you corner me.”
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then her father said quietly, “Your grandmother should have left it to your mother.”
Emily looked at him.
There it was.
The honest sentence beneath every family dinner.
The house was never supposed to be hers in their minds.
Ruth had chosen wrong because Ruth had chosen Emily.
Emily lifted her chin.
“No.”
