Claire followed Emily to the barn while the others argued near the porch.
For once, she came alone.
No mother behind her.
No father explaining.
No Daniel smoothing the edges.
Just Claire, pregnant, pale, and frightened.
“Emily.”
Emily stopped beside the old workbench.
“What?”
Claire hugged herself.
“Did you really not know we needed the money?”
Emily looked at her sister.
“I knew you wanted it.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Neither was planning to sell my house without asking.”
Claire looked down.
“We were going to ask.”
Emily waited.
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Eventually.”
The word said enough.
Emily picked up Ruth’s old recipe box and placed it carefully in her bag.
Claire touched her belly.
“Daniel’s job fell through.”
Emily closed her eyes.
There it was.
The missing piece.
“The apartment?”
“We put down a deposit we can’t cover.”
“Why would you do that?”
Claire’s face flushed.
“Mom said the house would sell.”
Emily stared.
“Before I agreed?”
Claire whispered, “She said you would.”
Emily laughed once.
It hurt.
“So you spent my no before I said it.”
Claire wiped her face.
“I was scared.”
“So was I.”
Claire looked confused.
Emily turned toward her.
“You think because I don’t cry in the kitchen, I’m not scared?”
“You think because I figure things out, I don’t need anything?”
“You think because I don’t make everyone rescue me, I’m fine being robbed?”
Claire’s mouth trembled.
“I never thought of it like that.”
“No.”
“You never had to.”
Outside, their mother shouted Emily’s name.
Claire flinched.
Emily saw it.
For the first time, she wondered how much of Claire’s entitlement was fear wearing the family’s favorite costume.
But compassion did not mean surrender.
Emily picked up the last box.
“I hope your baby has a safe home.”
Claire looked up quickly.
“Then help us.”
Emily shook her head.
“I can wish you safety without funding your choices.”
Claire began to cry silently now.
Not performatively.
Truly.
Emily’s heart hurt.
But her hands stayed firm.
“You should ask why Mom made you believe stealing from me was easier than telling me the truth.”
Claire looked toward the farmhouse.
