Chapter 13 - The Husband Chosen for FailureBrendan denied being recruited.

He insisted he met Cassidy at a museum fundraiser by chance.

Evelyn compared the event records with the Maine archive.

The fundraiser had been sponsored by a Vale shell foundation.

Brendan received a last-minute invitation from a consultant named Helena Ross.

Helena’s photograph matched Serena Blake under different hair and makeup.

Serena had not entered Cassidy’s life as a nurse first.

She had helped arrange the couple’s first meeting years earlier.

When confronted, Serena admitted working for the maternal trust before Diane hired her.

“My assignment was to evaluate Brendan,” she said.

“For what?”

“Whether he would become financially dependent without immediate access to your ownership.”

“Did my mother send you?”

“I never met Eleanor. Instructions came through encrypted channels.”

Serena reported Brendan’s ambitions, family debts, need for approval, and resentment toward more powerful people.

The trust considered him manageable.

Cassidy felt ill.

“Did you arrange for him to fall in love with me?”

“No one can arrange that.”

“You arranged access.”

“Yes.”

Brendan had been given opportunities to meet her, impress her, and appear protective.

The feelings that followed may have been real.

The foundation beneath them was not.

Cassidy called him through a recorded line.

“Did you know someone arranged our meeting?”

“No.”

“Did you know Serena before she entered the penthouse?”

His delay betrayed him.

“She looked familiar.”

“From where?”

“The museum fundraiser.”

“You recognized her and said nothing.”

“I thought I was imagining it.”

“You seem to imagine nothing whenever silence benefits you.”

Brendan began crying.

He claimed he loved Cassidy.

He also admitted that after marriage, Diane pressured him constantly about her hidden wealth. When he discovered Vale Dominion controlled the Morrison company, love became entangled with fear and ambition.

He wanted to prove he was not merely Cassidy’s husband.

Diane offered a path.

Temporary control.

One board vote.

Forty-eight hours.

He kept accepting smaller crimes because he believed he could stop before permanent harm occurred.

“You stood beside me while your mother discussed replacing our daughter with another pregnancy.”

“I hated her for saying it.”

“You stayed.”

“Yes.”

That answer ended what remained.

Evelyn opened another Maine file.

Brendan’s psychological profile included a predicted trigger:

Public humiliation of spouse by maternal authority figure will cause passivity, not intervention.

Diane’s freezing-water assault had been anticipated because the system knew Brendan would not stop her.

The trust wanted Cassidy to see him clearly.

It wanted Protocol Seven activated before the birth.

Someone believed destroying the marriage was necessary to protect the heir.

But why prepare the airfield removal?

Eleanor’s original plan may have been protective.

The current operator had expanded it into abduction.

Nathan found evidence of two competing groups inside the maternal trust.

One used the symbol of a silver rose.

The other used a black key.

The nursery and medical wing carried the silver rose.

The hidden transport instructions carried the black key.

Diane’s encrypted contact used the black key.

Arthur’s suspicious takeover document also contained black-key metadata.

Someone had infiltrated Eleanor’s system and redirected it.

The Maine estate was not necessarily the destination.

It may have been a transfer point.

Lucas identified the black-key coordinator.

Elise Tanner.

The private nurse had not been working only for Diane.

She manipulated the Morrisons into accelerating the delivery plan while feeding evidence to Protocol Seven.

She wanted both families destabilized.

Her current location appeared through a hospital access alert.

Elise was inside St. Catherine’s Women’s Center.

On Cassidy’s floor.

The nurse wore valid Vale Medical credentials and carried a sealed medication case.

Naomi activated emergency lockdown.
