“I went there twice without telling you.”
Cassidy stared at him.
“Why?”
“Your father’s old charter copy disappeared from the Vale archives. I suspected Diane had it.”
“You entered my bedroom?”
“The private safe was behind the dressing-room wall.”
“While I was asleep?”
“I believed waking you would alert Brendan.”
Cassidy felt the same anger she had directed at every person who concealed information in the name of protection.
“You made my body part of an operation I didn’t know existed.”
“I never touched you or permitted Serena near you.”
“But your access gave them cover.”
Arthur accepted that.
He had used his master family credential to enter the penthouse. The system log recorded his presence, allowing Serena’s later entries to blend into the same maintenance window.
Diane may have discovered the pattern and exploited it.
Arthur found no charter in the safe.
He did find a handwritten note from Brendan:
Mom says the old Vale rule is enough. We need Cassidy calm until Reeves arrives.
Arthur photographed it and left.
“Why didn’t you show me?” Cassidy asked.
“I thought it referred to a board maneuver.”
“You saw my husband discussing control of an old family rule with his mother.”
“I was trying to build a case strong enough to survive their attorneys.”
“You were deciding how much danger I could tolerate without asking me.”
Arthur looked toward the baby monitor.
“Yes.”
Cassidy turned away.
Trust did not vanish only through betrayal.
Sometimes it eroded through protection performed without consent.
Nathan called with an urgent update.
Diane’s locked jewelry safe had been opened under warrant from Vale corporate security because company property was believed inside.
They found more than jewelry.
The original Vale family charter rested beneath a velvet tray.
So did Cassidy’s biometric templates, prenatal records, and a sealed hospital bracelet bearing her name.
The bracelet listed a delivery date two weeks away.
Cassidy was not scheduled to deliver then.
A second bracelet carried the name Baby Girl Morrison.
Jessica had already reserved a maternity suite at the Morrison clinic.
Brendan was listed as sole authorized guardian.
Cassidy’s name appeared under restricted contact pending psychiatric clearance.
The process had been built in advance.
Arthur requested immediate preservation of the clinic’s systems.
Before the order could complete, the clinic reported a server failure.
Records began disappearing.
Protocol Seven triggered automatically, freezing every Vale-linked backup.
A remote user attempted to delete the maternity suite file.
The username belonged to Dr. Alana Reeves.
Nathan traced her device.
She was inside the penthouse.
Security had not seen her enter.
The building’s service logs showed a maintenance elevator opened thirty minutes before Protocol Seven.
Diane had hidden Reeves in the guest wing before dinner.
Cassidy realized the plan.
If the sedative worked and the cold-water shock caused distress, Reeves would emerge as the conveniently present doctor.
She would recommend immediate transfer to the Morrison clinic.
Everything would appear medically spontaneous.
Security entered the guest wing.
Reeves was gone.
A hidden service passage connected the penthouse to a lower mechanical floor. The building had been renovated using a company controlled by Malcolm.
The doctor escaped through infrastructure paid for with Cassidy’s money.
But she left behind a medical bag.
Inside were sedatives, false consent forms, two fetal-monitoring straps, and an emergency delivery kit.
One vial carried Cassidy’s name.
Another carried no name.
The laboratory identified a medication capable of inducing contractions.
Cassidy touched her belly.
“They were going to force labor.”
Naomi immediately ordered a second blood test.
A low concentration of the contraction-inducing drug appeared in Cassidy’s system.
The dose had likely been placed in the tea.
The freezing water was not meant only to incapacitate her.
