Then laughed.
The medical testimony established that sudden cold stress, combined with the drugs already inside Cassidy’s body, accelerated contractions and threatened both mother and child.
Diane claimed she did not expect premature delivery that night.
She expected a visible collapse.
Dr. Reeves would recommend transfer.
The continuity fund would activate.
Brendan would vote Cassidy’s shares.
Diane would control the household and newborn access.
The distinction between intended collapse and actual labor mattered to the precise charges.
It did not make the assault a joke.
Diane also selected June Rowan from the shelter files.
She chose a newborn whose mother’s identity was sealed and whose father was not publicly listed.
She planned to register June as Cassidy’s child if the real baby remained unborn.
“What would happen to June afterward?” the prosecutor asked.
Diane looked toward her attorney.
The answer appeared in Reeves’s documents.
After the false registration activated temporary authority, June would be moved to a foreign adoption network under another identity.
A child would exist legally only long enough to transfer money.
Then disappear.
Tessa Rowan did not testify publicly.
Her statement described waking in the clinic and learning her daughter had been moved.
She requested that June’s current name and location remain sealed.
The court respected it.
Diane was convicted of aggravated assault, poisoning, conspiracy to induce premature labor, kidnapping June, conspiracy to abduct Grace, medical fraud, identity trafficking, financial crimes, and obstruction.
The jury convicted her of attempted murder of Cassidy.
Unlike Brendan, Diane administered a combined drug and physical assault while understanding a severe medical crisis could result. The evidence showed she accepted death as a possible outcome if control transferred.
She received multiple life sentences.
At sentencing, Diane looked toward Cassidy.
“You entered our family pretending to be poor.”
“I never claimed poverty.”
“You watched us struggle while hiding money.”
“I financed the company.”
“You made Brendan feel small.”
“His response to feeling small belonged to him.”
Diane’s voice sharpened.
“You destroyed my family.”
Cassidy answered:
“You built a plan that required your son’s wife to become unconscious and your granddaughter to become movable.”
Grace was not present.
No court required a premature child’s later image to complete Diane’s punishment.
The bucket remained sealed on the evidence table.
Dirty residue had dried along the metal edge.
Diane glanced at it only once.
The object looked ordinary.
That was what disturbed Cassidy most.

Violence did not require a ceremonial weapon.

Cassidy refused.
