Chapter 1 - TWO BLINKSEvelyn DeLuca could hear everything.

She heard the medical monitor counting her heartbeat. She heard rain tapping the tinted windows of the private delivery suite. She heard her newborn daughter’s first hungry cry.

She could not lift a finger.

The anesthesia had worn away from her mind but not from her body. Every muscle below her eyes remained locked. Her chest rose only because a machine assisted each shallow breath.

Dr. Adrian Vale had called it a rare postoperative complication.

Evelyn knew he was lying.

During the emergency cesarean section, she had heard him whisper to the anesthesiologist that the infusion should have stopped ten minutes earlier. She had felt the scalpel before another drug dragged her into darkness.

Now Celeste Rowe stood beside the bed wearing a blood-smeared surgical glove.

Celeste lifted the newborn from Evelyn’s chest with both hands.

“Thanks for the free baby and the penthouse, you paralyzed cow.”

Evelyn screamed inside her own skull.

Her daughter’s tiny arms moved beneath the blanket as Celeste pressed the child possessively against her white designer dress.

Grant Mercer watched with his arms folded.

He was Evelyn’s husband of four years.

Three hours earlier, he had kissed her forehead and promised they would leave the hospital as a family.

Now he opened a black legal folder beside her bed.

The documents transferred temporary control of Evelyn’s trust, the Manhattan penthouse, her corporate voting shares, and custody of the baby to Grant.

At the bottom of the first page was Evelyn’s fingerprint.

Grant pressed the paper against her motionless hand.

“Don’t upset her,” he told Celeste. “She can still blink.”

Dr. Vale looked toward the monitor.

“Keep your voices down.”

“Why?” Celeste mocked. “She can’t tell anyone.”

They had forgotten the smart contact lenses.

Evelyn’s father had insisted she test them after a kidnapping threat against DeLuca Biomedical. A deliberate double blink activated emergency recording. A second pattern uploaded audio, video, and biological readings to three encrypted locations.

Evelyn focused on the hidden ceiling camera.

Blink.

Blink.

A pale blue flash crossed the corner of her vision.

Dr. Vale noticed.

“What did she just activate?”

Grant moved toward her face.

Too late.

Deep beneath the hospital, an encrypted tablet illuminated inside the compliance office. Dana Whitaker saw Evelyn’s emergency code, opened the live recording, and immediately sealed the delivery suite.

On the private elevator above the underground garage, Vittorio DeLuca received the same alert.

He watched Celeste hold his granddaughter while Grant displayed forged documents beside his paralyzed daughter.

His expression did not change.

“Take us upstairs,” he told the armed security officer beside him.

The delivery-room doors locked with a mechanical thud.

Celeste ran toward them with the baby.

Dana entered from the secured corridor and blocked her path.

“Put the child down. The entire room was recorded.”

Hospital security surrounded Grant.

Dr. Vale backed toward the medication cabinet.

Then the elevator doors opened.

Vittorio stepped into the corridor wearing a black overcoat, his silver hair wet from the rain.

“Step away from my daughter.”

Grant’s confidence collapsed.

Beneath Evelyn’s blanket, one finger twitched.

Celeste looked down at the newborn’s bracelet.

The plastic band displayed Evelyn’s name.

Underneath it, another label had been partially concealed.

Celeste peeled back the edge.

Her face changed.

“That isn’t the embryo code we paid for.”

Vittorio heard her.

He stopped several feet from the baby.

“What did you say?”

Celeste covered the hidden name with her thumb.

But Evelyn had already seen it reflected in the steel cabinet.

The second name was not Celeste Rowe.

It belonged to a woman Evelyn had never heard of.
