“I was present when Evelyn was born.”
“Were you inside the delivery room?” Dana asked.
“No. Isabella underwent an emergency cesarean. I saw her afterward.”
“Did you see the surgery?”
“No.”
“Did you review independent genetic testing?”
“There was no reason.”
The file included photographs of Bianca late in pregnancy. Dates aligned with Evelyn’s birth.
Another set showed Isabella wearing maternity clothing during the same period.
Two sisters.
Two pregnancies.
One infant publicly recorded.
Evelyn watched the photographs from her bed, her newly returned fingers trembling.
Nora warned everyone that the file could be fabricated.
Grant had already forged videos and legal documents. The underground archive might contain another layer of manipulation.
Dana ordered independent historical verification.
Isabella’s obstetric records showed routine prenatal appointments until seven weeks before delivery. After that, all care moved to Vale Reproductive Institute.
Bianca’s file began at the same time.
Both women were admitted on the same night.
Only Isabella was discharged with a baby.
Bianca vanished from public records.
The possibility was unbearable.
Vittorio approached Evelyn.
“Whatever the DNA says, you are my daughter.”
She looked at him without blinking.
He understood the difference between emotional reassurance and factual truth.
“I will not hide the result,” he said. “Not this time.”
A rapid kinship comparison was performed using Vittorio’s sample.
The result confirmed he was Evelyn’s biological father.
That did not identify her mother.
The baby’s DNA showed Matthew Mercer as biological father and a woman closely related to Evelyn as biological mother.
If Bianca had given birth to Evelyn, Bianca could still be both Evelyn’s mother and the newborn’s genetic mother—making the baby Evelyn’s full maternal half-sister.
If Isabella was Evelyn’s mother, Bianca would be the baby’s aunt and Evelyn’s aunt.
The genetic difference depended on mitochondrial and rare-marker testing that required several more hours.
Grant’s entire scheme might rest on a family secret even he did not fully understand.
Dana opened the next archive video.
Bianca appeared in a recovery bed, pale and exhausted.
Isabella sat beside her holding a newborn.
Bianca said, “You promised she would know.”
Isabella answered, “Not until Vale is gone.”
“She is my daughter.”
“She is our family.”
“She is not evidence.”
The recording ended before the baby’s face appeared clearly.
Vittorio lowered himself into a chair.
He recognized the room.
It was the same private suite where Isabella claimed to have delivered Evelyn.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Her mother and aunt had both been there.
One held her.
The other claimed her.
Neither woman had been allowed to tell the full story.
Dana’s encrypted tablet sounded another alert.
The underground level had detected movement in a sealed corridor.
Security entered and found a small apartment hidden behind the surveillance control room.

Fresh food sat on the counter.

The newest image had been taken that morning from inside the delivery suite.
Someone had lived beneath the hospital, watching her.
On the desk lay a note written by hand.

No signature.
Beside it stood a framed photograph of Bianca Voss taken less than one year earlier.
